FORT WORTH, Texas – Colorado Mesa women's wrestler
Marissa Gallegos placed sixth at the United States Senior National Tournament and Olympic Trials Qualifier over the weekend. The placement was just one spot outside of qualifying for the Olympic Trials in April but her journey to that placing was quite spectacular.
Gallegos reached the quarterfinals at 57kgs after winning her first three bouts. She defeated Audrie Lee 11-0 in her opening bout followed by a 12-2 over Jessica Fresh in her second bout.
In her round of 16 matchup, she defeated Gracie Figueroa of Menlo and Titan Mercury Wrestling Club 3-1. Figueroa was the WCWA National Champion at 116 pounds and competed for the Junior World Team a year ago.
In her quarterfinal matchup, she narrowly fell to eventual runner-up Tiana Jackson of Menlo 5-3 to drop her into the consolation bracket.
Her next matchup came against Koral Sugiyama of Twin Cities Regional Training. Sugiyama was a former WCWA and NAIA All-American at Campbellsville. Gallegos earned a 5-4 decision over her to move on.
The Denver native faced off with Kelsey Campbell in her next matchup. Campbell wrestled in the Olympic Games in 2012 in London and won the Olympic Trials Tournament in 2016. Gallegos handled her with ease as she picked up a 12-2 technical fall win.
Gallegos dropped her next two bouts by a combined five points and settled for sixth place in the tournament.
The top five place winners at each weight qualify for the US Olympic Trials in State College, Pa. on April 4-5.
