HOT SPRINGS, S.D.— The Colorado Mesa University women's triathlon team swept the Division II podium spots and claimed a divisional win while taking sixth place overall on Saturday morning at the Southern Hills Collegiate Cup here at the Angostura Recreational Area.
Maverick sophomore
Alexandra Schipai led the way, taking 29
th place overall with a time of 33 minutes, 33.9 seconds over the Super Sprint 375-meter swim, 10-kilometer bike and 1.55-mile run segments. Freshman
Rosa Schmidt-Moll finished just 9.3 seconds and two places later in 33:43.2 while
Shantelle Tupaz finished 37
th in 34:27.5 to round out the divisional podium.
Led by that group, the Mavericks scored 204 team points to finish well ahead of Black Hills State, which took second in the Division II standings with 122. The Mavs had all five of their scoring athletes finish ahead of the Yellow Jackets' top finisher.
CMU's
Mackenzie Mayer finished 40
th in 34:53.9 while
Sylvie Aardema Gagnon was 47
th in 36:06.8. Meanwhile,
Maddie Cox took 55
th in 37:41.3, one spot ahead of
Macy Arch, who was timed in 38:08.2
Kaia Merrill (40:44.0),
Jaycee Stephens (41:02.1) and
Emma Meyers (42:41.3) also competed for the Mavs, finishing 60
th, 61
st and 66
th, respectively.
The race included five of the top six teams in the Collegiate Triathlon Coaches Association's Division I preseason poll.
No. 2 ranked Arizona State won the overall title with 318 points as they placed seven athletes in the top ten, including individual winner Sidney Clement, who finished in 30:50.9.
TCU's Julia Visguerio was second in 31:09.5 and led the third-ranked Horned Frogs to a second place score of 290 points.
San Francisco, tied for fourth in the poll, was third with 268 points, while Denver, took fourth with 236. The Pioneers were tied with the Dons in the poll.
Meanwhile, South Dakota, ranked sixth in the Division I poll, finished with 208 points, just four more than the fourth-ranked (D-II) Mavs, who will next be in action on Sunday, Sept. 27 when they host the Desert's Edge Collegiate Cup alongside the Grand Junction Sports Commission at Highline Lake State Park in Loma, Colorado.
