HISTORY WITH ST. MARY'S
The Mavericks and Rattlers have met up just twice with both coming in the NCAA Tournament during the two schools' history.Â
Colorado Mesa won the first-ever matchup back on May 16, 2013 in Kingsville, Texas 6-2. Matt Williams pitched a complete game while Justin Rosales went 3-for-4 with four runs driven in.Â
The Rattlers came out on top in the second matchup which took place at Suplizio Field on May 14, 2015. The Mavericks gave up six runs in the second inning in a 6-5 loss at home. Bligh Madris went 2-for-3 in the game with a double and a run scored while James Young III added a triple.Â
HISTORY WITH LUBBOCK CHRISTIAN
Colorado Mesa and Lubbock Christian have met up three times and again all the matchups have come in the NCAA Tournament in the last 10 years.
After falling in the first-ever matchup on May 19, 2016 (8-6), the Mavericks have won the last two matchups with one coming in San Angelo, Texas on May 20, 2017 (3-2) and the other on May 18, 2023 (6-3) in Grand Junction.Â
In the most recent matchup, Jacob Rhoades got the ball and pitched seven inning only allowing two runs. Christos Stefanos went 2-for-3 with a home run and Caleb Thomason had a pinch-hit two-run double for the Mavericks.
IT'S GO TIME
Colorado Mesa is making their 25th appearance in the NCAA Tournament after earning the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's automatic bid by winning the conference tournament last week at The Diamond at Hamilton Ballpark.Â
This is the 17th straight appearance in the tournament and have made the tournament in 21 of the past 22 seasons having missed the 2008 tournament. They come in as the No. 1 seed and will host one half of the South Central Region Tournament.
Double-elimination tournament play begins on Thursday.Â
50-PIECE ON THE LINE
With the Mavericks next win, they will accomplish only two teams in Colorado Mesa history have done....win 50 games in a season. Both of the previous teams made the NCAA National Championships.
The first time the program accomplished the 50-win plateau in 2017 when the team finished in the final four at the Championships in Grand Prairie, Texas. The second came in 2019 when the Mavericks finished as the National Runner-up in Cary, N.C. The team finished with an all-time best 53-12 record.Â
The next win in the NCAA Tournament will be the program's 50th overall in the NCAA postseason. Colorado Mesa is currently 49-50 in NCAA Tournament games.Â
KING FELIX
Senior outfielder Kolby Felix earned the double award last week as he claimed the RMAC Player of the Year and RMAC Tournament MVP honor. The Maverick leadoff man will be up for All-Region and All-American honors in the coming weeks.
Felix batted .458 (11-for-24) with four doubles, two home runs and 10 runs scored. He finished the RMAC Tournament with an OPS above 1.400 and was a perfect 2-for-2 swiping bags.
The Sun City, Ariz. native broke the record for hit by pitches in a season with 26 now breaking the old record set by Erik Kozel in 2013. He ranks No. 8 in NCAA Division II in hit by pitches and is one of four categories where he ranks among the top-10 in the country.
WALKING THE LINE
One of the biggest improvements the Mavericks have made this year at the plate has been the amount of walks drawn. The coaching staff and players give a lot of credit to the Yakkertech and Trackman devices the program has installed over the last three seasons that have helped improve their eye at the plate.
Colorado Mesa has walked 295 times this season to lead the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and rank No. 19 in all of NCAA Division II. That has also helped lead the program to the second best on-base percentage in the country at .471.
The Mavericks 295 walks is third on the single season list with two games guaranteed left to play. The will likely reach second as the need three walks to move into second place all by themselves. The highest walk total in program history came in the 1997 season when they walked 317 times.Â
