KAILUA, Hawai'i— Hawai'i Pacific University, ranked 27
th in the ITA's NCAA Division II team rankings, proved to be too much for the Colorado Mesa University Maverick women's tennis team on Saturday night here at the Kailua Racquet Club.
The Sharks won the dual, played to clinch, 4-1. They are now 13-4 this season.
CMU fell to 10-13.
The Mavericks battled in the doubles matches but dropped No. 2 and 3 doubles matches by a 6-4 margins. Meanwhile, CMU seniors
Devyn Rodriguez and
Jade Brilhante were trailing 5-4 to HPU's Evi Roobol and Annika Harkovirta, who are ranked 15
th nationally in the unfinished No. 1 match-up.
The Sharks then picked up wins at No. 1, 2 and 4 from Roobol, Tereza Noah and Hakovirta. Roobol, ranked 58
th nationally, was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Rodriguez in the top flight while Noah beat CMU freshman
Valentina Gonzalez, 6-4, 6-1 in the second.
Hakovirta won over CMU's
Delia Maier at No. 4, by a 6-1, 6-4 scoreline.
The Mavs received their lone team point at No. 3 singles as
Jade Brilhante won by retirement mid-way through the second set over Kayleigh Castillo. Brilhante had won the first set in a tiebreaker and was leading the second, 4-1.
The No. 5 and 6 singles matches were left unfinished.
CMU's
Jane Steur had won the first set over Willow Dymkowski, 7-5, at No. 6.
The Sharks were up a set at No. 5.
The Mavs will continue their 3-match trip on the island of O'ahu with neutral site matches against Hawai'i Hilo and Point Loma Nazarene on Sunday and Monday, respectively.
