WAIPIO, Hawai'i— Colorado Mesa University senior
Jade Brilhante delivered a pair of wins against her hometown team to help lead the Maverick women's tennis team to a 5-2 win over the University of Hawai'i Hilo Vulcans here at the Central O'ahu Regional Park courts.
The Maverick women, who had defeated the Vulcans by a 4-0 score in the opening round of last year's Pacific West Conference Tournament before moving to independent status this season, also picked up a pair of 3-set singles wins after Brilhante and doubles partner
Devyn Rodriguez put the Mavs ahead in the dual 3-0.
The Vulcans then made things interesting with wins at No. 2 and 6 singles before
Delia Maier clinched the win with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 back-and-forth No. 4 singles win over Anna Takahashi.
Meanwhile,
Catalina Ballon also claimed a 3-6, 6-6, 7-5 win over Marie Cordonnier at No. 5 singles to complete the dual as CMU improved to 11-13 on the season while dropping the Vulcans to 4-10.
Earlier, the Mavs had won the doubles point as Brilhante and Rodriguez won the top flight match over Victoria Ricaurte-Cabas and Johanna Roggenkamp, 6-2.
Moments later,
Valentina Gonzalez and
Sophie Hartman claimed a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles, which in turn halted the No. 2 doubles match that Ballon and Maier were winning 5-4.
Rodriguez then made quick work of Roggenkamp, taking the top flight singles match 6-2, 6-0.
Brilhante then claimed her sixth straight singles win by a 6-4, 6-1 margin over Ricauarte-Cabas.
The Vulcans remained alive thanks to Pia Starnecker's tight 7-5, 6-4 win over Gonzalez at No. 2 singles, which was followed by a 6-0, 5-7, 7-5 win by Kaiya Ideta over the Mavs'
Jane Steur at No. 6.
However, Maier and Ballon's 3-set wins proved to be enough to lift the Mavs to the win.
The Mavs will wrap up their trip to Hawai'i on Monday taking on the Point Loma Sea Lions, who are 13-3 overall after defeating the Vulcans by a 5-2 score on Saturday.
