SERIES HISTORY WITH REGIS
The Mavericks and Rangers are set to meet again in Grand Junction this weekend with the weather looking a little suspect.Â
The Mavericks are 104-28 since 2000 against the Rangers and took the only two games that were played last year in Denver. Colorado Mesa has also won seven straight in the series.Â
The Rangers are in a fight for the sixth and final spot in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament with three weekends left. Adams State and Colorado Christian are the others knotted so every win is extremely important to those three squads.Â
SCOUTING THE RANGERS
Like the Mavericks in 2025, Regis lost 26 seniors from their team and have had a hard time replacing them. They currently sit at 14-23-1 on the season and 5-14-1 in the RMAC with three weeks to play. They have Adams State and New Mexico Highlands remaining after this weekend.
Ethan Wood leads the Ranger offense with a .438 batting average and 10 home runs. He had a two home run game against Biola early in the season and had 11 hits in the CCU series two weeks ago.
Rocco Harmon leads the staff with an 8.00 ERA in 45 innings pitched. He made two appearances in the Mines series last week with his best out coming against MSU Denver where he had six strikeouts.
KING FELIX
Senior outfielder Kolby Felix was named the RMAC Player of the Week following his performance in the series sweep of UCCS last weekend at The Diamond.Â
Felix batted .625 (10-for-16) with seven runs scored, a double, two triples, and two home runs from his customary leadoff spot in the order. He had at least one hit of every game of the series including three hits in the opener and four hits in the finale.
He ranks second in Division II baseball with 66 runs scored on the season and is among the NCAA leaders in hit by pitches at 18.
STREAKS
The Mavericks have now won 20 games in a row and have had two streaks this season of at least 17 wins or more. During the 2017 season, Colorado Mesa won 22 games in a row which is the longest winning streak since at least the 2000 season.
They have not lost an NCAA Division II game since February 7 when they fell to Cal Poly Pomona in the back half of the Saturday doubleheader in California. The one loss in the middle of the season came against Division I Utah Valley (6-4) on the road in Orem.
There have been nine series sweeps this season which is also the most since at least the 2000 season and likely longer. Several seasons had seven series sweeps.
THE RIGHT INGREDIENTS
Colorado Mesa has been praised all year about the pitching staff and the work they have done at elevation. They have a team ERA of 3.92 which ranks ninth in NCAA Division II.
It is also the offense that has quietly become a threat to the teams they play against. They dont have a ton of big boppers in the lineup like the 2021 version of the Mavericks but they do it by putting pressure on defenses.
They rank No. 3 in NCAA Division II in on-base percentage at .468 and are No. 8 in the country at sacrifice bunts with 36. Their top home run threat is Kolby Felix with 12 the next closest is Exra Farmer with six.
The thing that might go the most unnoticed is the 94 stolen bases.
THE KID MAKES HIS DEBUT
The Colorado Mesa baseball program had another former player make their Major League Baseball debut over the weekend. Andrew Morris (2019-21) was recalled from Triple A Saint Paul Saints to play for the Minnesota Twins in Toronto last weekend.
The Boulder, Colo. native made his debut on Sunday pitching three innings and allowing one run on six hits and struck out two Blue Jays.Â
During his time at Colorado Mesa, Morris went 18-2 with a 3.23 ERA in over 175 innings pitched. He finished his CMU career with 215 strikeouts which still ranks fifth in program history.
Morris joins current St. Louis Cardinals starter Kyle Leahy as Colorado Mesa baseball players currently in the MLB.
