LONG BEACH, Calif.— Colorado Mesa University's
Izaak Siefken got his 2026 outdoor track & field season off to a hot start as he smashed his own javelin throw school record by more than 12 feet as he won that event at the Beach Opener on Friday afternoon here at Long Beach State's Jack Rose Track.
Siefken won the event with a throw of 68.58 meters (225 feet, 0 inches) crushing his nearly year-old school record of 64.83 meters (212-8). He then went on to win the 2025 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference title.
His Friday afternoon throw will also likely secure NCAA Division II Championship qualification and currently puts him second on the early season national performance list.
The heave would have ranked him tenth on last year's final national qualification list.
Siefken, who does not compete during the indoor season, was the only Maverick athlete at the meet and made the trip with CMU Throws Coach
Jay Shuman to get an early jump on the outdoor campaign.
The bulk of the Mavericks will open the outdoor slate in two weeks with the Maverick Early Bird Open, which the Mavs will host on Mar. 19 and 20.
In between, CMU sprinters
Teo Casados and
Joseph Randolph will compete in the 200 meters at next weekend's (Mar. 13-14) NCAA Division II Indoor Championships in Viriginia Beach, Virginia.
