Maier reaches century wins mark as Mavs come up just short

Three-set victories lift nationally-ranked Tigers to 4-3 win

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University senior Delia Maier won her 100th career match during doubles play but had her milestone day spoiled as the Colorado College Tigers won a trio of 3-set matches in extra-long tiebreakers en route to a 4-3 team win over the Maverick women's tennis team on Saturday here at Life Time Fitness.

The dual had the potential to be a classic and lived up to its billing after the two teams split earlier duals in the 2025-26 season.

The Tigers, currently ranked 25th in the ITA's NCAA Division III rankings, improved to 12-3 after also winning by a 4-3 score in the fall in Pueblo.  The Mavs answered back on Feb. 28 with a 5-2 win but fell to 10-12 after dropping Saturday's match-up.

Maier, a senior from Hechingen, Germany helped the Mavs win the doubles point, teaming with Catalina Ballon for a 6-3 win over CC's Kala Komanduri and Ally Lowe at No. 2.  They now have 19 wins together this season, the most for any Maverick women since Skyler Nelson also won 19 in 2012-13.

Maier is just the 15th Maverick woman to ever reach the 100 win mark and now has a 53-39 career record in doubles play.

Meanwhile, freshman Valentina Gonzalez and Sophie Hartman were able to post a 7-5 win at No. 3 doubles to give the Mavs the early lead despite the Tigers' No. 1 doubles win.

The Mavs then went up 2-0 as Jade Brilhante registered a 6-4, 6-3 win over Komanduri at No. 3 singles.

However, the Tigers seized momentum with a pair of intense victories in the top two singles flights.

At No. 2, Lowe fell 9-7 in the first-set tiebreaker but cruised to a 6-0 win in the second set over Gonzalez.  Lowe then out-lasted the Maverick freshman by a 12-10 count in the match tie-breaker.

Meanwhile, Aspen Young also came from a set down to get past CMU junior Devyn Rodriguez, 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (13-11) in the top flight.

The Tigers then went ahead 3-2 as Avery Hickman beat Ballon, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles.

The Mavs then tried to comeback and leveled the dual at 3-3 when Jane Steur was able to come from behind in a 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-7) win over Lindsay Popeo at No. 6 singles.

However, Lucia Moravek answered with a 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (11-9) win at No. 4 singles over Maier to deliver the Tigers to their overall victory.

The Mavericks will now prepare for a trip to Hawai'i, where they will play three matches in as many days, starting next Saturday (Apr. 4) against Hawai'i Pacific on the island of O'ahu.
