Mav youngsters lead the way in 22-6 rout of Penguins

Thirteen different Mavericks score in blowout win

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University redshirt freshman Aidan Brock and true freshman Ari Villano recorded hat tricks while sophomore transfer Camden Moody added a goal and three assists in a 22-6 rout over visiting Dominican University of California on Friday night here at the Community Hospital Unity Field.

Thirteen different Mavericks scored in the dominant effort as the nation's tenth-ranked Mavs improved to 5-2 overall while moving into a tie for first place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings at 2-0.

The visiting Penguins dropped to 0-6 overall and to 0-3 in the league.

The Mavericks were without a few key veterans due to injury but fourth-year CMU Head Coach Troy Moyer was able to go to his bench early and often as the Mavericks scored four goals in the opening 3:42 of the game while quickly building a 9-1 lead after the first quarter.

They also scored all six third-quarter goals and dominated the game throughout.

That domination started at the faceoff mark as four different Mavericks combined to win 27 of the game's 31 draws.  Starter Alex Martinez, a redshirt freshman, won eight of his ten and scooped up a game-high five groundballs while Jackson Cody went 8-for-8 with three ground balls.

Dillan Thomas, won six of his seven while Zander Adfield won five of six.  Both of those men also had three ground balls as the Mavs finished with a 43-30 total edge in that category.

Offensively, Brock scored a season-high five goals in what was his second career appearance while Villano registered three to raise his season total to 11.  Starter Jack Cooper and reserves Marco Lagos and Luke Geisbauer added two apiece.

Lagos, Andrew Diaz, Julius Petersen and Dax Lambright all scored their first goals of the season in Friday's win.

Ryan Pless also rounded out the list of Maverick goal scorers.

Brock was also able to record one of the Mavs' 18 assists and led all players with six points while Moody and Villano both finished with four points.  Stefan Dingbaum, Merrick Banning and Kanon Atwood all had a goal and two assists to register three points apiece.

Geisbauer, a freshman, also had three points to more than double his previous career total.

The Mavericks also played four goalkeepers with freshman Boaz Brown making his second consecutive start.  He played the first half and made five saves before Luke Parrish had a stellar third quarter, making five saves without allowing a goal.

Hunter Jesse and Grant Brooker split time in the final stanza as Jesse made two saves.

Will Elfline and Calvin Welsh had two goals each for the Penguins, who had just 18 players available.

Logan Henry made ten saves for the visitors but allowed all 22 goals while facing 44 total Maverick shots.

The Mavericks will remain at home on Sunday to face the Concordia University Irvine Golden Eagles in another RMAC match-up at 1 p.m.  CUI improved to 4-4 overall and to 2-1 in the RMAC with a 21-4 win at Adams State on Friday afternoon.  The Penguins will now head to Adams State for a Sunday clash.
