Mavs ride fast start, balanced scoring to 19-8 win over CUI

CMU takes 11-0 lead while eight different Mavs tally multiple goals

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University Mavericks scored the game's first 11 goals and rode that hot start to a 19-8 win over visiting Concordia University Irvine in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action on Sunday afternoon here at Community Hospital Unity Field.

The nation's tenth-ranked Mavericks improved to 6-2 overall and forged a first place tie with Westminster University atop the RMAC standings at 3-0 as they claimed their third home win in as many tries this season.

The Mavs are now 7-0 all-time against the Golden Eagles, who have played the Mavs in the last two RMAC Tournament title games.

With Sunday's loss they fell to 4-5 overall and sit in third place in the RMAC standings at 2-2.

Eight different Mavericks scored two or more goals as Ari Villano and Dillon Pless both recorded hat tricks while Carson Points had a career-high six points with two goals and a game and career-high four assists.

Meanwhile, freshman goalie Boaz Brown made a career-high 16 saves in what was his third straight start.

The Mavs scored all eight of the first quarter goals and extended their lead to 11-0 with three strikes in the first 5 ½ minutes of the second before the Golden Eagles got on the scoreboard while tallying four of the final five goals to make it a 12-4 game at halftime.

However, the Mavs won the third-quarter 4-1 as they cruised to the win.

Villano who also had a hat trick in Friday's 22-6 win over Dominican, was one of seven different Mavericks who scored in the opening quarter.  The freshman now has three hat tricks and is second on the Maverick squad in total scoring.

Pless recorded his second hat trick of the campaign.

Andrew Diaz, Connor Jensen, Deuce Kirschke, Erich Petersen, Julius Petersen all joined Points as two-goal scorers while Jack Cooper, the Maverick leader in goals, added one.

Meanwhile, ten different Mavericks combined for 14 assists.

Although the Mavericks had only a 39-30 advantage in total shots, they dominated the final score as Brown was impressive throughout with three or more saves in all four quarters.

The faceoff battle was also even as both teams won 15.

CMU starter Alex Martinez won eight of 19 and scooped up six ground balls while Dillan Thomas won seven of 11.

The Mavs finished with a substantial 48-34 total advantage in ground balls and were ferocious on defense as 11 different Mavericks recorded 12 combined caused turnovers.

They also held CUI's Jeremy Barnes, the RMAC's leading goal scorer and the 2025 RMAC Attacker of the Year, to just one goal on four shots.

Brady Porter and Brown finished with five ground balls each for CMU.

CUI had seven different goal scorers, including Max Texter, who scored twice.

Dawson Loudermilk won ten of 17 faceoffs and had seven ground balls.

CUI keeper Brody Woods made just three saves, all in the first half.

The Mavericks will be on the road next week, beginning the trip on Thursday night at 7 p.m. when the Mavs take on Westminster in Salt Lake City, Utah in what will be a top of the standings RMAC clash.
