Brihante beats nationally-ranked Cougar to highlight Mavs' final dual of California trip

CMU senior goes 3-1 in singles as Mavs finish Spring Break swing, 2-2

AZUSA, Calif.— Jade Brilhante delivered a No. 3 singles win, her third of the trip, over a nationally-ranked opponent to lead the Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team in a 6-1 setback to the nation's 34th-ranked Azusa Pacific University Cougars on Wednesday afternoon here at the Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex.

Brilhante, who went 3-1 during the Mavericks' 4-day spring break swing through Southern California beat APU's Karola Suviste, 6-4, 6-4.  The Estonian Cougar was ranked 72nd in the latest ITA NCAA Division II Singles Rankings, released earlier in the day.

However, 26th-ranked Stina Larsson led the Cougars, who were able to win the other five singles matches after winning at No. 2 and 3 doubles to seal up the doubles point.

Meanwhile, Suviste and Larsson, who are 21st in the ITA's national doubles rankings, played with separate partners in Wednesday's dual.

Larsson paired with fellow Swede Tia Kaukenas and led the unfinished No. 1 doubles match by a slight 6-5 margin over Brilhante and Devyn Rodriguez, who drew Larsson in singles as well.

Meanwhile, Suviste played with Shannele Lopez and claimed a 6-3 win over the Mavs' Delia Maier and Catalina Ballon at No. 2 doubles.

The Cougars then clinched the doubles point with Vini Bautista and Mariana Reveles Arreola's 7-5 win over Maverick freshmen Valentina Gonzalez and Sophie Hartman.

The Cougars improved to 13-2 this spring with their eighth straight win while the Mavericks fell to 9-11 while finishing up their trip with a 2-2 team effort, featuring 7-0 and 4-2 wins over Westmont and Menlo on Sunday and Tuesday, respectively.

The Mavericks will now return home for a brief respite before heading back out on the road to face NCAA Division III squads University of the Ozarks (Ark.) and Colorado College in Colorado Springs on Mar. 27 and 28, respectively.
