Mavs pick up second California win, 4-2 over Oaks

Brilhante, Ballon both go 2-0

AZUSA, Calif.— The Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team swept the doubles matches and then won three of the first four completed singles matches as they posted a 4-2 win over the Menlo College Oaks on Tuesday in a neutral-site match-up here at Azusa Pacific University Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex.

The Mavericks are now 2-1 on their trip to Southern California, which they will close out on Wednesday when they take on the host Cougars, currently ranked 22nd in the nation.

The Mavs also improved to 9-10 overall while dropping the Oaks, who had won six of their last seven, to 7-4.

Jade Brilhante and Catalina Ballon both went 2-0 for the Mavs as they each won a doubles match before winning their respective singles matches.

Brilhante and partner Devyn Rodriguez were 6-2 winners at No. 1 doubles while Ballon and Delia Maier were able to pull out a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles.

The Mavs were also leading 5-2 at No. 3 doubles in a match that was left unfinished.

Action then moved to singles as Brilhante cruised past Livia Harper, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.

CMU freshman Valentina Gonzalez then delivered a 6-4, 6-1 win over Yousra Hidass at No. 2 singles to give the Mavs a 3-0 overall lead.

The Oaks would get on the board as Zofia Dziewiecka claimed a 7-5, 6-3 win over Rodriguez at No. 1 singles.

However, Ballon clinched the dual with her 6-3, 6-2 win over Ombeline Robilliart at No. 5 singles.  The Chilean sophomore also won both of her matches in Monday's dual at Biola.

The Oaks then won at No. 4 while the teams left the No. 6 singles match unfinished.
