Ballon goes 2-0 for Mavs in Monday dual at Biola

LA MIRADA, Calif.— Colorado Mesa University sophomore Catalina Ballon won her No. 5 singles match after teaming with Delia Maier to pull out a thrilling doubles point decider to lead the Mavericks' efforts in a Monday afternoon tennis match against and at Biola University.

However, the Eagles were able to win the other five singles matches to claim the 5-2 win while improving to 9-3 with their fifth straight win.

The Mavs slipped to 8-10.

Ballon and Maier were able to pull out a 10-8 win over the Eagles' Alessia Radu and Yeo Kyung Kim in the No.  2 doubles tie-breaker giving the Mavs the early 1-0 advantage.

The Maverick all-freshman duo of Valentina Gonzalez and Sophie Hartman had earlier won 6-2 at No. 3 doubles over Alexis Romano and Cassie after the Eagles' duo of Dafne Andrew and Ivet Stancheva, ranked 42nd nationally, won at No. 1 doubles over CMU's Devyn Rodriguez and Jade Brilhante.

In singles, the Eagles won at No. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 singles although Devyn Rodriguez put a good fight in the top flight against Stancheva, who won the first set in a tie-breaker before winning the second, 6-2.

Meanwhile, Ballon was a 6-3, 6-2 victor over Isabelle Karam.

The Mavs will continue their 4-day trip in Southern California on Tuesday when they head to nearby Azusa to face the Menlo College Oaks in a neutral-site match at Azusa Pacific University's Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex.

That match will begin at 9:30 a.m. PDT (10:30 a.m. Mountain).

The Mavs will then take on the host and nation's 22nd-ranked APU Cougars on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. PDT (2:30 p.m. Mountain), a time that was moved up 30 minutes from the originally scheduled time.
