SANTA BARBARA, Calif.— The Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team dominated the host Westmont College Warriors in a 7-0 road win to open their 4-day swing through California on Sunday here at the Abbott Tennis Courts.
The Mavs snapped a 3-match slide and improved to 8-9 overall and to 4-5 against Division II foes.
The Warriors are now 7-7.
After winning at both No. 1 and 2 doubles, the Mavericks won all six singles matches but had to come from a set down in two of them.
In doubles,
Devyn Rodriguez and
Jade Brilhante were 6-2 winners over Sabina Salve and Lauren Gee in the top flight.
The Warriors answered back with a win by the same score at No. 3.
However,
Catalina Ballon and
Delia Maier then completed a 6-3 win over Ellie Triplett and Liska Knight at No. 3.
In singles,
Jane Steur extended her winning streak to three matches with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 win over Avala Elwood at No. 6.
Meanwhile, Maier was nearly as thorough in her 6-1, 6-1 win over Triplett at No. 4.
Brilhante then finished off Gee, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles to clinch the dual.
Elsewhere, Rodriguez beat Julie Spitzer, 7-5, 6-4 in the No. 1 singles matchup.
In the two 3-setters,
Valentina Gonzalez dropped the first set by a 6-2 score but won the second by a 6-4 margin over Salva at No. 2 singles. Gonzalez then won the match tie-breaker, 10-6.
Meanwhile, Ballon won a 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8) match over Emma Rashid at No. 5 singles.
The Mavs also received a pair of exhibition singles wins from
Sophie Hartman and
Taylor Nokes. Steur and Nokes were also leading over the Warriors; Rylee Halsey and Jessie Allen, 5-4 and 30-love in an exhibition doubles match.
The Mavericks will continue their trip on Monday afternoon, playing the Biola University Eagles in La Mirada. First serves are slated for 2 p.m. Pacific (3 p.m. Mountain).
