POCATELLO, Idaho— Colorado Mesa University's
Jane Steur delivered a 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 6 singles in her lone match of the day, to lead the Mavericks' efforts in their spring season opening doubleheader at NCAA Division I Idaho State University on Saturday.
The Bengals won both team match-ups, 6-1 and 7-0 to pick up their first two wins and move to 2-4.
CMU is now 2-3 overall after going 2-1 against fellow NCAA Division II opposition in the fall.
Steur did not play in doubles against the Bengals and beat Evelina Zhuk in the morning match to give the Mavs their lone team point of the day.
The Dutch senior had missed the fall season.
She did not play in the second dual, which the Bengals swept. Freshman doubles duo
Valentina Gonzalez and
Sophie Hartman were the closest to victory and took their No. 3 doubles match-up against Victoria Grymalska and Zhuk to a tiebreaker, before the Bengal duo won it, 7-6 (9-7).
CMU will continue the season with more indoor matches next weekend in Kearney, Nebraska.
The Mavs will play NAIA Hastings (Neb.) and NCAA Division II Northwest Missouri State on Friday and will wrap up the weekend on Saturday against host Nebraska-Kearney.
