GLENDALE, Ariz.— The Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team completed a weekend sweep, recording their third straight 4-0 win over host Arizona Christian University on Saturday here at the Paseo Racquet Center.
The Mavs improved to 6-5 on the season and 3-0 on the weekend
after defeating Western New Mexico University and Ottawa University of Arizona by 4-0 scores on Friday.
In Saturday's dual, the Mavericks were able to seize the doubles point as
Delia Maier and
Catalina Ballon won the tiebreaker, 7-5 at No. 2 after
Devyn Rodriguez and
Jade Brilhante claimed a 6-4 win in the top flight.
Both Maverick pairs went 3-0 throughout the weekend.
The Firestorm, who fell to 1-4 as a team this spring, had won the No. 3 doubles match, 6-2.
The Mavericks then dominated in singles play, conceding just four games in their three wins.
The other three matches were left unfinished although the Mavs were up a set in each.
Ballon was first Maverick to claim a singles win, blanking Eloise Bigot, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5.
Brilhante then finished off a 6-0, 6-1 win over Gracie Madeya at No. 3 before freshman
Sophie Hartman clinched the dual with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Savannah Salvin at No 6.
She went 3-0 throughout the weekend.
CMU's Rodriguez, Valentia Gonzalez and
Delia Maier had all won the first set of their respective matches and were leading their opponents in the second.
The Mavericks will return home for two of their only three home matches of the spring next weekend. They will host NCAA Division I Utah Tech on Friday (Feb. 27) at 1:30 p.m. before taking on Division III Colorado College at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28.
An Alumni Reunion Pre-Match Ceremony will proceed Saturday's dual at 1:15 p.m.
