SERIES HISTORY WITH QUINCY
Despite these two teams being from different regions and parts of the country, this wont be the first time Quincy and Colorado Mesa have met. The two teams squared off in the 2017 NCAA National Championships in Grand Prairie, Texas. The Mavericks came out on top 10-3 to advance in the tournament. Kyle Serrano and Bligh Madris each homered in the game.Â
While there isnt much to go off of, there are a few common opponents or recognizable matchups from seasons past. The Hawks took all four games from Colorado School of Mines last season and they dropped two of three at Tampa last season. Quincy beefed their schedule up and went to Central Missouri where they dropped two.
SCOUTING THE HAWKS
Quincy opened the season in Millington, Tenn. where they swept a four-game series from Christian Brothers at USA Stadium. They had an average margin of victory of six runs per win and batted .309 and had an ERA of 5.06 in the series.Â
Ben Dahlof is a bat that the Mavericks will need to eep in check. Dahlof batted .529 with five doubles and six runs driven in against Christian Brothers. He finished the weekend with an OPS of 1.403.Â
Roman Harrison will likely get the ball in game one. The 6-3 lefty is coming off a start where he went seven innings and allowed one earned run on seven hits, struck out eight and walked two to earn the win.
THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME
Colorado Mesa will open the home portion of the schedule this week and fans will have a chance to get to know these Mavericks, as they will play 12 straight in the friendly confines of The Diamond at Hamilton Ballpark. Three of the four series will be against non-conference opponents with the final series being the conference opener against New Mexico Highlands.
The Mavericks enjoyed a 29-4 record at home last season and are 133-28 in the last five seasons in Grand Junction.Â
They have not had double digit losses at home since 2005, a season where three-time World Series Champion Sergio Romo pitched for the Mavs, and conversly went a perfect 30-0 during the 2014 season. The 30 wins in 2014 and 2023 at home tie a program record.Â
FARMER FAMILY 2.0
Sophomore Ezra Farmer is the second member of the Farmer Family to don the Maverick uniform. Ezra is following in the footsteps of his brother Caleb who starred for the Mavericks from 2018-22.
Despite the family ties, Ezra is doing his best to make a name for himself. After the first weekend, the San Jacinto, Calif. native is batting .533 with a double, a triple, and a home run with three runs driven in. In game four of the series, he was just a double short of the cycle as he had two singles, a triple and a ninth inning home run.
Prior to his time at Colorado Mesa, Farmer spent two seasons in the Philadelphia Phillies organzation. He has a career .220 average with five doubles in 49 minor league games.
WELCOME BACK RUTER
Redshirt senior Caleb Ruter has successfully returned to the mound for the Mavericks after a season-ending injury during his start against Chico State in California. After many months of rehab, the Arvada, Colo. native made his scheduled start in the opening series with Cal Poly Pomona.
Ruter pitched four and two-thirds innings without allowing a run against the Broncos. He scattered five hits, walked one and struck out four with his opponents hitting .278 against him. Look for the big lefty to make a start in the series against Quincy at The Diamond.Â
THE ARM BARN IS STOCKED
The Mavericks displayed their depth in the bullpen in the opening weekend series in California. Colorado Mesa deployed 16 pithcers in the series split with Cal Poly Pomona as only two pitchers made multiple appearances in veterans Brenden Morris and Sage Ferguson, both of whom will factor late in ball games.
Of the 16 that saw action, 10 of those did not allow a run. Those 10 also only allowed seven hits in 13 and a third innings pitched. Nobody recorded a save but the group did strikeout 18 batters.
