DURANGO, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa women's golf team opened competition at the Nick Turner Invitational on Monday (Oct. 5) afternoon at Hillcrest Golf Club. The Mavericks joined five other teams in the field that is hosted by Fort Lewis College.
Not all teams finished their round due to several lightning strikes in the area. The Mavericks, however, were one of three teams that did complete their round, and they were in fourth place out of six total teams with a score of 25-over, 313. They narrowly trail the hosts, Fort Lewis, who are three strokes ahead of them.
Westminster currently leads the tournament with a 14-over, 302 with New Mexico Junior College in second with an incomplete round of 16-over.
Hayden Hawley led the Mavericks with a 5-over, 77 which put her in a tie for 13
th place after the first round of play. The sophomore played very steady today with 14 pars, three bogeys and one double bogey. She played the front nine to a 1-over, 37 including pars on her first eight holes she contested.
Hunter Gledhill is one stroke back of her teammate with a 6-over, 78 and in a tie for 15
th place on the leaderboard. The junior had seven bogeys and a lone birdie which came on No. 16, a short par 4 from 296 yards out.
Allison Sanger (7-over, 79) and
Libby Bourassa (7-over, 79) round out the Maverick scorers in the first round of the tournament.
Westminster's Ashley Lam finished her round at 1-over, 73 to lead the medalist race.
Tomorrow's round two is scheduled to begin with a shotgun start beginning at 10:00 AM.
