Golz leads Mavericks at Eagle Women's Open

CHADRON, Neb. – The Colorado Mesa women's wrestling team had 12 wrestlers compete in the Eagle Women's Open at Chadron State College on Saturday (Jan. 10) inside the Chicoine Center. The Mavericks had a total of six wrestlers finish in the top-6 including one champion.

Freshman Kylee Golz was crowned the champion at 124 pounds as she finished the tournament with a perfect 4-0 record. Golz defeated Rei Ogden of Bismarck State in the final bout by way of pin at 1:38 in the first period.

On her way to the final, the Mission Viejo, Calif. native earned a first round technical fall win over Brooke Zejada of Texas Woman's and followed with a technical fall win over Karen Goitia-Cortez of Southeast CC. Golz earned another technical fall win in the semifinals as she defeated Ana Rojas Zamora 13-2.

Junior Valerie Glenn earned a third-place finish at 160 pounds after a solid day on the mat. Glenn didn't do things the easy way as she fell to the eventual champion in her first match of the day then won four straight, including two tech falls and a pin, following a second-round bye. She pinned Hastings' Jayla Ford in the third-place match after leading 6-3 at the time of the pin.

Alissa Perez placed fourth at 103 pounds after finishing the day with a 2-2 record. Perez earned a win by pin in the quarters over a wrestler from Minot State before falling to an unattached wrestler in the semis. She bounced back in the consolation semis with a 10-0 tech fall win before falling in the third-place match.

Keira Hersel (110), Rachel Jones (117), and Alyssa Jackson (131) all finished in fifth-place at their respective weights. Jackson's came in the largest weight class of the day at 29 wrestlers.

The Mavericks will be back in action next weekend when they travel east for a pair of competitions. A select group will compete in the York Open in York, Neb. on Saturday while a separate group will compete in a pair of duals in Hays, Kan. on Sunday. Colorado Mesa is slated to take on Fort Hays State and Sioux Falls.
