The Mavericks started the Fall re-entering into Division II and kicking the season off on the road with a bang. The team traveled to St. George, Utah to take on Southern Utah University for the first time in 15s. Only returning 11 players due to graduation and transfer of athletes, the Mavs fielded a young team sprinkled with rookies. The veteran returners did a great job leading by example and setting the tone as mere minutes into the matchup the Mavs were touching down, and the scoring did not stop there.
The matchup was a highlight reel of try scoring, superb kicking, fast breakaways, big tackles, feral poaching and hard play. DI All American
Chloe Coop led the scoring frenzy with 4 trys on the day. However, 10 Mavs added to the score with the rookie class rising to the occasion and adding their own flare with Bently Steyaert, Navaya Steele, Kate Irsfeld and Elle Magaldi all scoring their first trys. All 22 players that traveled earned quality minutes which is crucial to the understanding of the game.
In this high scoring matchup - the Mavs cruised to a 113-0 victory. Despite the score, the Mavs have things to work on, and they will head back to the drawing board to prepare for the home opener next Saturday against a formidable foe in New Mexico State University. This match will also mark the start of a new tradition, an annual Rugby Alumni Weekend as the Mavs will welcome back 16 years of CMU Rugby players. See you at the pitch next Saturday September 13
at 11am.
