The Mavericks traveled over the mountains to the University of Denver for a full day of competitive rugby. Competing in the Division II pool, the team faced a challenging field that included Division I B-sides as well as the reigning Division III national champions from the Colorado School of Mines. Coming off a strong performance in New Mexico, the team arrived ready to build on that momentum.
The day began with an early matchup against CSU.
Chloe Coop and
Navaya Steele led the scoring effort in this contest. Capitalizing on strong team defense, turnovers, and poaches, the Mavs' speed on the edge proved decisive. Coop recorded three tries, Steele added two, and freshman
Kate Irsfeld contributed one with an impressive kick-and-chase effort.
Next, the Mavs faced Wyoming. Carrying confidence from the opening match, the team continued to execute with intensity on both sides of the ball. Powerful runs, physical tackles, and well-timed support lines opened gaps throughout the game. Eight different Mavs crossed the try line, highlighting the team's depth and balanced attack, as CMU secured a convincing 44–0 victory.
In the third match of the day against CU, the Mavs once again demonstrated a complete performance. Aggressive defense, clear communication, and disciplined tackling fueled the offense by forcing turnovers and creating scoring opportunities. CU managed to score late in the game, but CMU maintained control throughout, earning a 34–5 win.
One of the most anticipated matchups of the day came when CMU faced Colorado School of Mines. Both teams had been looking forward to the contest, pitting the nation's top Division III program against the former Division II champions. Mines struck quickly, with their Division III
Player of the Year scoring just 30 seconds into the match. Rather than slowing the Mavs, the early try sparked a surge of energy. Within four minutes, CMU responded with two tries—
Kaylee Burns breaking through the middle for the first, followed by Coop racing down the edge for the second. From there, the Mavs controlled the match. Strong defensive efforts from Contreras and Steyaert created key turnovers that led directly to scoring opportunities. Burns finished with a hat trick, while Coop added two more tries.
With Player of the Day
Kaylee Burns and former Division I All-American
Chloe Coop each finishing the tournament with six tries each, the Mavs delivered an impressive team performance. Nine of the eleven players recorded tries, showcasing the depth, versatility, and high rugby IQ of the roster. The team outscored opponents 136–17 while securing four victories on the day.
Fans can catch the Mavericks in action again during the final weekend of the month when they host the High Peaks Conference Division II National Qualifier at PeachBowl Park in Palisade, Colorado. For updates and additional information, follow the team on Instagram and Facebook.
