NEW ORLEANS— Seven Colorado Mesa University track & field athletes have received a combined eight all-region honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, which announced its 2025 outdoor track & field season honors this week following the conclusion of the regular season.
The top five individuals in each event from each of the eight NCAA Division II regions in the country and the members of the top three ranked relay teams in each region were selected.
The Maverick list of honorees includes three men in
Teo Casados, the South Central Region's top performer in the 200 meters,
Antone Higgs in the long jump and
Izaak Siefken in the javelin.
Gaby Horton was selected in the women's 100 meters and also received another honor in the 4x100-meter relay alongside her relay teammates
Serenity Burnett-Perry,
Sylvia Johansen and
Kammi Merritt, who all picked up their first career all-region plaudits.
Horton has now claimed four USTFCCCA All-Region honors this season after winning them for the 60 and 200 meters during the indoor season.
During the outdoor campaign, she and her relay teammates smashed a CMU school-record with a time of 45.16 seconds as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships. That time, which converts to 45.26 with the altitude adjustments ranked the Mavs third in the South Central Region, which comprises the RMAC and Lone Star Conference.
The Maverick relay quartet was also selected for next week's NCAA Division II Championships and is seeded 15
th nationally.
Horton also finished the season ranked fourth in the region for the 100 meters with her altitude-adjusted 100-meter time of 11.50 seconds (11.47-actual) at the Maverick Invitational.
Casados received his second career all-region honor after also snagging one in the 200 meters during the 2024 indoor season. The senior from Thornton, Colorado is the third overall seed in next week's national championships after blazing to a wind-aided, but NCAA qualification legal time of 20.35 seconds (20.42-altitude adjusted) in that event to win the RMAC title. He also won the 100 meter title this year and will be making his NCAA Championship debut as the region's top performer.
Higgs will also be competing at the national meet, after qualifying in the long jump with a mark of 7.51 meters (24 feet, 7 ¾ inches), which led the RMAC season long performance list while ranking him third in the region. The Bahamian junior also qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships, finishing 15
th. He is a first time all-region honoree.
The same can be said for Siefken, who ranks fourth in the region in the javelin with his season-best throw of 64.83 meters (212-8). He won the RMAC title in the event and ended up 23
rd on the national performance list, just one spot shy of what it took to qualify for the national championships.
