SERIES HISTORY WITH MSU DENVER
The Mavericks and Roadrunners are very familiar with each other as they will play each other for the eighth time in exactly two weeks. The Mavericks are 5-2 against MSU Denver having taken the season series 3-1 and won two of the three matchups in the RMAC Tournament last weekend in Grand Junction.
The Mavericks are 113-38 all-time against MSU Denver that includes the seven matchups this season. This will be the first neutral site matchup since May 5, 2010 when Colorado Mesa defeated MSU Denver 16-15 in Kearney, Neb. in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament. That is the only true neutral site matchup in the series since 2000.
SCOUTING THE ROADRUNNERS
The MSU Denver lineup can be scary with a pair of big boppers int he middle of the lineup and a pair of solid players to set the table. Senior Cam Yuran has been the biggest Maverick killer for four years now as he steps into the postseason with a .376 average and 21 home runs and 69 runs driven in.Â
Easton Admundson has 34 home runs but has struck out 77 times this season.
Brad Helton figures to get the ball in the regional opener. Helton threw an absolute gem in the RMAC Tournament. Helton tossed seven innings and limited Regis to three hits and struck out seven in seven innings of work.
GO CART
Colorado Mesa junior Cameron Cartwright went on an absolute terror during the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament. The Parker, Colo. native finished the tournament with a .630 (17-for-27) batting average with 11 runs scored, four doubles, five home runs and 18 runs driven in. He had a 2.221 OPS and swiped a pair of bases to earn the RMAC Tournament MVP honors.
Cartwright elevated his slugging percentage to .980 and moved into the top spot in Division II, 10 points higher than Regis slugger and RMAC Player of the Year Adam Paniagua who sits in second.
By hitting .630 in the RMAC Tournament, Cartwright has ascended to the No. 1 batting average in all of Division II at .469. The No. 2 position belongs to MSU Denver's Andrew Graham at .449. His mark would lead all Division I hitters as Southern U's Cardell Thibodeaux leads DI at .453.
STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON
Maverick closer JJ Almeda was named to the RMAC All-Tournament team after making three appearances during the tournament and earning a pair of saves. The Lynwood, Calif. native pitched five and two-thirds innings and allowed just one run on five hits, walked one and struck out 10.
The Cerritos JC transfer pitched a season-high three and a third innings against UCCS in the tournament. He allowed just two hits and struck out a season-high six in the save.
The fiery righthander is second on the team in appearances with 16 but has 26 and two-thirds innings pitched with 32 strikeouts and opponents hitting .260 off of him.Â
RHEEM IS READY
Redshirt junior TJ Rheem finished last season as the Mavericks starting shortstop but injuries early in the year derailed a yearlong stint in the starting lineup.Â
Rheem returned from injury the start of April but has played sparingly until the RMAC Tournament last weekend. The Parker, Colo. native played in four games and made three starts during the tournament. He finished with six hits, five runs and five runs driven in to help the Mavericks come away with the title.Â
Fun fact, TJ Rheem has hits in five games this season and each one of those games have been multi-hit games.
MAVERICKS MARCH ON
The Colorado Mesa Mavericks earned the automatic bid from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and will be competing in their 24th NCAA Tournament and their 16th straight appearance in the tournament. Ironically enough, the Mavericks are 48-48 in those NCAA Tournament games.
Colorado Mesa's RMAC Tournament win was their third in a row and their 23rd overall tournament championship. The next closest conference opponent is CSU Pueblo who has six title with the most recent one coming in 2013.
