Mavs celebrate Senior Day with two wins

Mavs continue winning streaks over CSUP, CC

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University's Makenna Livingston celebrated Senior Day with three wins, the 96th, 97th and 98th of her impressive career, as the Maverick women's tennis team dominated CSU Pueblo 7-0 in the morning before winning a hard-fought 4-3 win over Colorado College in the afternoon on Saturday here at the Elliott Tennis Center.

Livingston's final win of the day came in a tight 3-set match over CC's Kala Komanduri in the top flight as she pulled the Mavericks into a 3-3 tie against the Tigers before Jane Steur finished off a dominant 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6  singles, a match that was played in a later wave.

Livingston also teamed with fellow senior Audrey O'Rear for a No. 2 doubles win against CSU Pueblo and won her No. 1 singles match against the ThunderWolves' Margot Aebischer, 6-4, 6-0 as the Mavs made quick work of the short-handed Pack (1-9).

CMU improved to 13-9 win with the wins while CC, ranked 40th in the ITA's NCAA Division III Team Rankings, fell to 5-7.

Livingston now has 49 singles and 49 doubles wins in her career while O'Rear, a normal Maverick reserve, got a pair of doubles starts during CMU's final home day, which came less than 24 hours after their home-opener of a brief one-weekend home schedule on Friday.  The duo were recognized during Senior Day festivities in between the two duals.

In the morning, CSU Pueblo was only able to field a lineup of five players and won just three games in the two doubles matches that were played.

Devyn Rodriguez and Jade Brilhante were 6-1 winners over Aebischer and Marta Garcia in the top flight while Livingston and O'Rear beat Yelena Travica and Malaya Pendon, 6-2.

The Mavs' domination continued in singles as the Pack won just 11 games in the five played singles matches.

Delia Maier and Rodriguez were the most dominant as Maier beat Pendon, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 singles while Rodriguez was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Garcia in the second flight.

Brilhante, who went 4-0 throughout the day, was also a comfortable 6-1, 6-1 winner at No. 3 singles while Catalina Ballon Marin beat MaKayla Martinez, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 before Livingston finished the dual off with her victory over Aebischer.

CMU has now defeated the ThunderWolves 43 straight times since 2007, including the last 12 by 7-0 margins.

The Mavs also continued their domination against the Tigers but were taken down to the wire and needed a pair of match tie-breakers to win for the 18th consecutive time over CC since 2012.

After dropping the doubles point, the Mavericks were able to tie the dual at 1 with Maier's 6-3, 6-2 win over Lucia Moravek at No. 4 singles.

However, the Tigers answered back at No. 5 as Lindsay Popeo beat Ballon Marin, 6-3, 6-1 to put the visitors in front, 2-1.

Meanwhile, Brilhante dropped the first set of her No. 3 singles encounter with Aspen Young by a 6-1 margin but rallied to win the second set by the same scoreline.  Brilhante then won a tight 10-8 tie-breaker to level the dual at 2 apiece.

However, Ally Lowe won over Rodriguez on Court 2 by a 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-5) margin to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead.

Livingston, who won the first set, 6-4 over Komanduri, then dropped the second set, 6-0, but was able to keep the Mavs alive with her 10-4 tie-breaking win over the Tiger sophomore setting up Steur, who was comfortably ahead at the point to deliver the clinching win.

CMU freshman Taylor Nokes also posted an 8-2 exhibition win over Meredith Walters after she and Kayla Huish fell 7-5 to Abby Wilson and Walters in an exhibition doubles affair.

The Mavs should officially receive notice that have been chosen for a fifth straight Pacific West Conference Tournament on Monday and will then wrap up the regular season next weekend with road matches at MSU Denver, CC and CSU Pueblo next Friday, Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
