DENVER — In the rematch of last week's crucial PacWest women's tennis dual, Colorado Mesa fell 4-3 to MSU Denver on Friday at Assembly Athletic Complex in Denver.
After winning the doubles point when Jade Brilhante and Devyn Rodriguez won 6-4 at No. 1 and Catalina Ballon Marin and Jane Steur winning 6-3 at No. 3, the Mavericks lost four of the first five singles matches to drop the dual on the Roadrunners' Senior Day.
Rodriguez won 6-3, 6-2 over Kim Heddes at No. 2 singles and Steur wrapped up the day with a 6-2, 6-7, 10-4 win at No. 6 against Louise Hosking.
Three of the four singles matches CMU lost went to three sets.
Makenna Livingston, ranked No. 67 in the nation in singles, dropped a third-set tiebreaker at No. 1 to Hanna Haber, ranked No. 62, losing 6-3, 6-7 (8-6), 7-6 (7-4),
Brilhante lost 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 to Victoria Ricuarte-Cabas at No. 3 and Delia Maier fell 1-6, 7-5, 6-1 to Kambra Roles at No. 4.
Entering the final weekend of the regular season, CMU (14-10, 6-3 PacWest) was the No. 7 qualifier in the women's 12-team tournament field and MSU Denver (11-12, 5-4 PacWest) the No. 8 qualifier. Final seedings and pairings will be announced Saturday night.
Friday's dual was the final scheduled meeting of the in-state rivals, although they could meet up in the PacWest Tournament, which is April 16-19 at the Surprise Tennis Center in Surprise, Ariz. MSU Denver is eliminating its tennis programs after this season.
The Mavericks play at Division III Colorado College at 11 a.m. Saturday in Colorado Springs, then wrap up the regular season at 9:30 Sunday morning against CSU Pueblo at Pueblo City Park.
