SERIES HISTORY WITH REGIS
The Mavericks have had quite a bit of success against Regis since 2000. They re 102-28 in that time frame including a 19-game win streak from March 9, 2019 until April 15, 2022. They have managed to go 39-14 in Denver during that time and are 8-2 in their last 10 against the Rangers.
Colorado Mesa defeated Regis twice in last season's version of the RMAC Tournament at The Diamond. The Mavericks took the winner's bracket final 7-1 before winning the championship game 11-1.
The Mavericks took three of the four games in last season's series in Denver. They dropped the first game of the series before winning the next three straight.
SCOUTING THE RANGERS
The Rangers are having one of their best season's ever and will enter the weekend at 27-11 overall and 17-3 in the conference. They trail the Mavericks by two games but Colorado Mesa has yet to take their bye week which comes next week.
Backstop Adam Paniagua made the Golden Spikes Midseason Watch List and one of the top players in the conference. He is batting .426 with 14 doubles, 22 home runs and 75 runs driven in.Â
Mason Ashcraft has been a regular for the Rangers on the mound for four seasons now. He is 3-0 with 24 innings pitched and 24 strikeouts with a 6.38 ERA.
BAM BAM CAM
Junior outfielder Cameron Cartwright is continuing to make a case as one of the top outfielders in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference along with the NCAA South Central Region. He led the Mavericks in batting last weekend against UCCS and is becoming a long ball threat from the three-hole in the order.
In the series with UCCS, the Parker, Colo. native batted .625 (10-for-16) with three home runs, eight runs scored and 10 runs driven in. He finished with an OPS of 1.888 and started all four games in left field. In game three of the series, he went 4-for-4 with two home runs and seven runs driven in. His fourth inning grand slam gave the Mavericks the lead for good in the matchup.
On the season, he is batting .391 with six doubles, 10 home runs and 35 runs driven in.
WE'RE GOING STREAKING
The Mavericks have a pair of players that are on long hitting streaks heading into the important series with Regis. Paul Schoenfeld and Cameron Cartwright each have hitting streaks North of 15 games.Â
Schoenfeld enters with a 17-game hitting streak dating back to game four of the CSU Pueblo series. In fact, the Wichita, Kan. native has a hit in 35 of 38 games he has played in this season. He is batting a team-leading .416 with 16 doubles, three triples, six home runs and 11 stolen bases.
Cartwright is on a 16-game hitting streak after his monster series against the Mountain Lions. The Seward County CC transfer started his streak in game one of the Colorado Christian series and has gone ballistic ever since.
ANOTHER RELIEVER TO POTENTIAL STARTER
The Mavericks may have another relief pitcher that follows in similar footsteps Sage Ferguson did just two weeks ago. Senior Andrew Pogue could be in line to see his first start as a Maverick in the near future.Â
The Peoria, Ill. native is coming off a weekend where he pitched a season-high five innings (previous high was two innings) and allowed one run on five hits and struck out four to earn his second win of the season. It was the first run he had given up since February 28 against MSU Billings.
On the season, he is 2-0 wtih a 3.00 ERA in 12 innings pitched. He has allowed nine hits and struck out 17 with opponents batting .209 against him.
KEYS TO VICTORY
The Mavericks have a few trends that have led them to victory this year and we will take a quick dive into what those trends are. We will start with the pitching and defense side where the Mavericks are 21-5 when they limit their opponents to five runs or less. When the hit category is tied or their opponent has more hits, the Mavericks record is 4-7.Â
Offensively, Colorado Mesa is 20-4 when they score first and 26-2 when they score more than five runs. Both of those losses occurred at UCCS last weekend.
They are also 3-0 in Thursday games.
