Mavericks explode for 28 runs in sweep of Cowgirls

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Totaling a staggering 28 runs and 26 hits on the day, the Colorado Mesa University Softball Team cruised their way to a four-game series sweep of New Mexico Highlands University this weekend with them taking the final two games of the series today at CMU Softball Field.

Playing just 10 innings total, the Mavericks won both games on the day by run-rule with each game only going five innings. Colorado Mesa won the first game 10-1 and the second game 18-1 as the team has now recorded three run-rule victories on the season.

The Mavs move to 14-8 on the year now with them improving to 12-4 in the RMAC as they are riding an eight-game winning streak following the conclusion of this weekend.

Below is a short recap of each game:

GAME 1 (CMU 10, NMHU 1; 5 innings):

The Mavericks won game one the day thanks to yet another dominant pitching performance from Jessalyn Gallegos as the offense supported her putting up crooked numbers in two innings to secure the first mercy rule of the double header.

Gallegos, who dominated yesterday in game one of the series, did just the same today as she went all five innings en route to her sixth win of the season. Gallegos only allowed three hits and one run to the Cowgirls while striking out seven in the game to bring her series strikeout total to 19.

The Cowgirls got their only run of the day on a solo home run in the first inning before being held scoreless the rest of the contest as the Mavs scored in three straight innings to follow.

Over the second, third and fourth innings the Mavs scored all 10 of their runs, with five of them coming in the third.

Jackie Oster and Kamdyn Hagerty each hit home runs during that stretch with Hagerty leading the team with three RBIs herself. Chloe Valdez, Khloe Kubitschek and Tegan Medina all collected RBIs during those innings as well.

The Mavs finished with nine hits total in the game as three different players recorded two hits apiece.

GAME 2 (CMU 18, NMHU 1; 5 innings):

Following a 10-run performance in game one of the day, the Mavs were able to repeat that and more in game two as they completely dominated the Cowgirls from the first inning on as they set a new game-high in runs this season with 18.

The Mavs recorded 17 hits in the game with nine different players recording at least one. Furthermore, five players also recorded multi-hit games for Colorado Mesa with Myah Arrieta and Chloe Valdez each finishing 3-3 to lead the team.

The group of Makayla Westmoreland, Ally Distler, Khloe Kubitschek and Bella Aragon were the four others who finished with two hits each.

Arrieta hit two home runs in the win with Distler also owning one as the duo have now combined for 13 this season.

16 RBIs were hit in the game with the Mavs never striking out once. They reached base 21 times and scored 10 runs alone in the third inning to match the game one run total.

Preslee Christensen got the start in the circle for the Mavs while going all five innings for her first complete game of the season. The senior is now 2-3 on the year as she finished the day allowing just one run and one hit while striking out six.
