Anderson reaches century milestone in CMU's fifth straight win

Ohngemach, Havel combine for eight in 17-6 triumph

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Justine Anderson reached the century mark for career goals while Caroline Ohngemach and Courtney Havel combined for eight more as the Colorado Mesa University women's lacrosse team extended their winning streak to five.

The Mavericks also moved to 5-0 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play for the first time since 2021 and for just the second time in program history with a 17-6 win over visiting Fort Lewis College on Sunday afternoon here at the Community Hospital Unity Field.

Anderson became just the fifth Maverick to reach the 100-goal mark when she scored with 11 minutes and 12 seconds remaining in the game off a nice Ohngemach feed.

Anderson, a junior out of Colorado Springs and last year's RMAC Attacker of the Year, then returned the favor for Ohngemach's career-high matching fifth goal just 1:43 later as the Mavs cruised to their third straight running-clock home win over the last eight days against the three RMAC teams in the bottom half of the conference standings.

CMU is now 6-4 and atop the standings with a 5-0 mark.

FLC suffered a sixth straight running-clock defeat and fell to 1-10 overall and to 0-5 in the conference.

Anderson is just the fifth member of the Mavericks' 100-goal club, joining now CMU assistant coach Kiley Davis, who was the last to join it back in 2023.

After scoring 15 unanswered goals in Friday night's 17-2 win over CSU Pueblo, the Mavericks conceded the first goal on a free position shot just 1:52 into the game but scored five goals over the next 3 ½ minutes to go up 5-1.  All five of those goals came from different Mavericks.

The Skyhawks then closed to within 6-4 by the end of a high-scoring first quarter.

However, the Mavericks went on to score all five of the game's goals in the second quarter and the first four of the third quarter to take a 15-4 lead while implementing the running clock.

The Skyhawks' Jasmine Nguyen, who had four goals to pace the visitors, then cut the gap to 15-5 with 3:08 left before Anderson opened the fourth quarter scoring with her milestone goal.

Nine different Mavericks scored in the game as Ohngemach finished with six offensive points while raising her season goal total to 24.

Anderson has 19 on the season and leads the RMAC with 18 assists.

Meanwhile, Havel scored three goals to take the RMAC goal scoring lead with 37, putting her second and third in just 1:04 apart near the start of the second half.  She has now recorded a hat trick in five straight games and has seven hat tricks on the season.

Ohngemach now has five this season and has scored five goals on three separate occasions.

Anderson, who added three assists, and Courteney Murray also scored two goals as Anderson extended her multiple-season goal-scoring streak to 15 games while Murray has scored two or more goals in three of the Mavs' last four games.

Ali Bryant, Mikki Brown, Ella Freemon, Cameron Flynn and Emme Rezoski also scored for the Mavs.

Brown's goal opened the second-quarter scoring run just 30 seconds into that period and came against her former team.  She was at FLC for the past three years and was second on last year's Skyhawk squad for goals.

Flynn's goal, which came at the 6:08 mark of the third quarter, was the first of her season and came on an Anderson assist.

The Mavs finished the afternoon with a 40-21 shooting advantage and put 28 of their shots on net.

Skyhawk starting goalie Caley Lay gave up six goals while failing to make the save in the first 10 ½ minutes and was then pulled from the game before Abigail Leighty made 11 saves while allowing the other 11 Maverick goals.

CMU freshman Heather Hawkins made seven saves and gave up just five goals in the first 51:52 before fellow freshman Susan Kirchhoff played the remaining 8:08 while making two saves and allowing just one goal in what was her first collegiate appearance.

The Mavs also had a slight 15-12 advantage in draw controls as Rezoski racked up six while Bryant had five.

Bryant and Sophie Astone also had five groundballs to pace the Mavs in that category while Saide Chappuis and Sofia Chock caused two turnovers apiece.

The game also featured 52 fouls and 16 cards, including six yellow and ten green.  Both teams scored three free position shot goals.

The Mavericks will play their next game on the road, facing Westminster in Salt Lake City on Saturday (Apr. 5) at 2:30.  The Mavs defeated the Griffins, 17-6 last Saturday (Mar. 22).
