Anderson matches points record as Mavs extend winning streak to six

CMU scores 11 first-quarter goals while putting up season-high 20

SALT LAKE CITY— Justine Anderson scored five goals and matched a program-record with nine offensive points as the Colorado Mesa University Maverick women's lacrosse team scored early and often in a 20-5 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference road win over Westminster University on Saturday afternoon here at the Griffins' Dumke Field.

The Mavericks scored 11 times in the first quarter alone and cruised to their sixth straight win, the last four of which have been by more than ten goals.

They also improved to 7-4 overall while maintaining a perfect 6-0 RMAC record.

The Griffins slipped to 5-6 overall and to 2-4 in the conference.

Anderson, the 2024 RMAC Attacker of the Year, scored three of the Mavs' first-quarter goals and set a new career-high with four assists before adding two goals in the final seven minutes as well.
With nine points, she joins a group of five Mavs tied atop the single-game record book.

Caroline Ohngemach also continued her scoring spree, netting three goals while adding three assists after recording eight goals and 13 points in two wins last weekend.

Ali Bryant, Ella Freemon and Courtney Havel all scored two goals as well as Bryant recorded three assists and three draw controls.

Emma Rezoski also had seven draw controls as the Mavs won 18 of 27 while finishing with a 29-14 advantage in ground balls.

Anderson had six of those groundballs while reigning NCAA Division II National Defensive Player of the Week Heather Hawkins made five saves while giving up just four goals in more than 54 minutes of work before freshman Susan Kirchhoff made three saves in the final 5:51 of mop-up duty.

The Mavs jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first ten minutes as five different Mavericks score  in that stretch.

Eleven scored overall as the Mavs posted a season-high goal tally.

The Mavs implemented the running clock before the end of the first quarter and extended an 11-1 lead after 15 minutes to 14-2 by the half.  They then led 17-4 after three quarter and scored three more times in the fourth to cap the win.

The Mavs have now defeated the Griffins 21 straight times since 2015.

They are now 6-0 in conference play for just the second time in program history (2021).

CMU will return home for their two most important games of the season to date.  The RMAC leaders will host third-place UCCS (7-3, 4-2 RMAC) on Friday at 4 p.m. before hosting nationally-ranked and second-place Regis (7-4, 5-1 RMAC) next Sunday (Apr. 13) at 2 p.m. in their Senior Day game at Community Hospital Unity Field.
