GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University women's lacrosse team held visiting CSU Pueblo without a goal for the final 48 ½ minutes and scored 15 unanswered times to cruise to a dominant 17-2 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory over the ThunderWolves on Friday night here at the Mavericks' Community Hospital Unity Field.
The Mavs received four goals from
Courtney Havel and additional hat tricks from
Caroline Ohngemach and
Mikki Brown as they won their fourth straight game while moving above .500 overall for the first time this season at 5-4. They also maintained their first place position in the RMAC standings at 4-0 while CSU Pueblo fell to 1-7 overall and to 1-3 in conference action.
CMU freshman goalie
Heather Hawkins was solid throughout and made nine saves while allowing just two goals to thwart the Pack.
The Mavs had slight 1-0 and 2-1 leads but could not fight off a pesky ThunderWolf squad for nearly 15 minutes. However, they got rolling with a Havel goal with 25 seconds left in the first quarter and scored four more times in the second to build a 7-2 lead at the half.
CMU then added four more goals in the third quarter and scored six times in the fourth as they implemented a running clock just 1:06 into the final frame while regularly running their lesser-used players into the game and continuing to dominate a smaller Pack squad that had just 14 total players available.
Ten different Mavericks scored in Friday's win as Havel and Ohnegmach combined for six of CMU's first eight goals. Ohnegmach also had four assists in the game and matched her career-high with seven points.
Meanwhile, Brown recorded her first hat trick in a Mav uniform with three second half goals, including two of the last three. She had scored just twice earlier in the season.
Kenzie Streby and
Sidney Edmonds also scored their first goals of the season for the Mavs while
Emme Rezoski chipped in her second on a blistering free position shot with just 2:43 remaining. Rezoski also had three assists.
Carson Dickey,
Ali Bryant and
Justine Anderson also scored for the Mavs as Anderson inched ever closer to the century mark for career goals and is now just two away with 98.
Meanwhile,
Sydney Skinner and
Olivia Turk were strong defensively as Skinner had three caused turnovers and a pair of groundballs while Turk had three groundballs.
CMU also caused 11 and forced the ThunderWolves into 20 turnovers.
The Mavs were guilty of just 10 turnovers and were a perfect 17-for-17 on clear attempt while the Pack failed on eight of their 21.
CMU also had a 15-7 edge in draw controls and took 48 shots while holding the Pack to just 17.
Avery Irlbeck had a career-high eight of those draw controls while Havel took ten shots.
Moira Turpen and Reese Wasmund scored for the Pack while Breonna Mason made 14 saves in a respectable outing.
The Mavericks will close out a 3-game homestand on Sunday afternoon when they host visiting Fort Lewis College at 1 p.m. The Skyhawks lost 20-4 at Westminster on Friday and are now 1-9 overall and 0-4 in conference play.
