The Mavericks kicked off the Spring 7s season with a solid tournament win down in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Going 4-0 on the day, the ladies started the spring off with the same fire they carried throughout the fall, starting three rookies in the first match of the day against the host team. CMU came out a bit sluggish and found themselves down by seven just two minutes into the match. That lead would be the only time on the day the Mavs trailed, and it was not for long. Rookie Division I All American
Chloe Coop tested her speed on the outside and blew past the competition to get her first of seven trys on the day.
Carly Scheck tacked on the conversion to tie this one up going into half. Two minutes into the second half, CMU started to roll.
Ashley Bollinger slipped through for a nice try, Scheck with the conversion. Then Scheck added a try and conversion of her own on a nice break through the middle. Growing this lead to 21-7. NMSU would add one more try in extra time to close out this match 21-14.
The second match of the day saw the Mavs facing a familiar foe in CU. Coop did not take long to burst through the opposition under a minute into the match. The Mavs cleaned up their game and their offloads and support was impressive. CU answered back three minutes later but did not convert their kick, so the lead was still with the Mavs. Scheck grew the lead with a nice break through the middle of the pitch and Ellen Rickerd tacked on the conversion brining the Mavs into half leading 14-5.
Ashley Bollinger started the second half just as hot as the first with an impressive individual effort and fun on the outside touching down under a minute into the second. CU would get another try, but Coop would hammer the win home with a late run closing out this match with a decisive 26-15 CMU victory.
Yet again the Mavs faced regular competition with a match against CSU next. This would be the closest match of the day. The Mavs started 4 Rookies and the veterans led by example. Speedster Coop again showed her wheels with a massive run on the outside to put the Mavs up by seven with a Rickerd conversion. Then freshmen
Kaylee Burns got in on the scoring action with a greasy run down the middle of the pitch. CSU would add one in extra time just before half to close the gap 14-5 at half. CSU was the first to score out of the half, but Bollinger would answer right back with a nice run after the offload. CSU would get one more at the end, but the Mavs had too big of a lead for them to catch back up. CMU takes this one 21-17.
In the final match of the day CMU saw some former competition. It's been several years since the Mavs have faced Colorado College, but both teams ended up in New Mexico. This was a decisive win for the Mavs as all things were going in their favor. Offloads were crisp, runs were made at pace, and support and options were on both sides of the breakdown. Coop scored twice in the first half before she was given a breather. Rickerd would add on another and Coop would close out the day with her seventh score. Mavs ran away with this one 26-5. CMU walked away 4-0 on the day and NMSU 7s Champions after the season opener. Impressively CMU got it done with just 9 ladies after an injury in the first match and an injury in warmups for the second match.
