SERIES HISTORY WITH MINES
The Mavericks and Orediggers had some solid battles in the late 2010s but since 2000, Colorado Mesa owns a 118-20 record against the Orediggers including a 45-14 mark on the road in Golden.
Colorado Mesa has won 11 in a row against Mines including a series sweep in Grand Junction last season. The teams split the season series in 2022 and was capped with Kannon Handy's no-hitter in game four of the series.
The Mavericks and Orediggers had deep battles in the 2018 and 2019 seasons which included battles in the NCAA South Central Region Tournaments and RMAC Tournaments.Â
SCOUTING THE OREDIGGERS
The Orediggers are coming off getting swept by cross town rival MSU Denver this past weekend. The final three games of the series were decided by three runs or less in each.
Jackson Woolwine is a tough out at the plat with a .508 OBP and a .396 batting average. He had a four-hit game in game two of the series with New Mexico Highlands and has a hit in seven straight games.
Seaver Newby is one of the top pitchers in the RMAC and he comes out of the bullpen. Newby is 5-2 in 11 appearances with a 5.80 ERA in 35.2 innings pitched. He had a season-high seven strikeouts in his season debut against Southwestern Oklahoma.
RMAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
It was next man up mentality for the Maverick outfielders last weekend and that man was Cameron Cartwright. The junior transfer from Seward CC made the most of his opportunities by picking up at least one hit in every game during the series. On Tuesday, the RMAC awarded him with the RMAC Player of the Week honor, a first for the Mavericks this season.
The Parker, Colo. native batted .571 (8-for-14) with a double, four home runs, nine runs scored and 13 runs driven in. He finished the weekend with an OPS of 2.111 and finished the weekend with a two home run game in the finale against the Cougars.
Cartwright joins his teammate Gauge Lockhart as RMAC weekly award winners as Lockhart earned Pitcher of the Week honors on March 10.
Colorado Mesa softball player Brynn Escobar was named the RMAC Softball Player of the Week giving the Mavericks the baseball and softball sweep of RMAC Player of the Week honors.
MAKING THEIR MOVE
The Mavericks have scored a total of 234 runs this season in their 26 games played giving them an average of nine runs per game. The middle innings is proving to be where the Mavericks are doing their damage, just when the opposing pitcher is finishing his second time through the order and entering his third time seems to be the sweet spot.
In the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, Colorado Mesa has scored 118 runs or just over 50 percent of their total runs scored on the season is happening in the middle innings.Â
YEAH GLOW
Senior two-way player Tyler Glowacki is providing strong support for the team from the outfield and on the mound this season. The San Diego native has put together solid at-bats but the ball hasnt been finding the hole to get the hits. He has made five starts this season in the outfield but has recorded just one hit.
On the mound, it has been a different story. The lefthander is 1-0 in seven appearances and has his opponents batting just .094 this season. He has pitched nine and two-thirds innings and allowed three hits, walked five and struck out 16. He is one of seven Mavericks who has not allowed an earned run yet.
MAKING THE BEST OF IT
Senior Joey Mazzetti suffered an arm injury in his final season of eligibility and despite the devastating blow is making the best of the opportunities that have been presented to him. Last Friday, he earned a pinch hit situation with the bases loaded against Colorado Christian in the fifth inning. The Corona, Calif. native mashed a 1-2 pitch that seemed to disappear into the night for a grand slam and his first home run as a Maverick.Â
THE FRESHMAN BACKSTOP
Freshman catcher Noah Neufeld sits behind a pair of veterans on the depth chart. The Laguna Beach, Calif. native has made six appearances on the season with two starts. Ironically enough, Neufeld has homered in both games in which he has started. He is batting .364 (4-for-11) on the season with two home runs, three runs scored and six runs driven in.
