PUEBLO, Colo.— Izaak Siefken smashed the Colorado Mesa University record in the javelin throw while he and women's hammer throw school record holder
Augustine Hancock both set NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying efforts during the Dr. Dan Caprioglio Invitational on Friday, the opening day of Colorado Mesa University's outdoor track & field season.
Those efforts highlighted a strong day for a contingent of Mavericks who competed in three field event disciplines in and around the CSU Pueblo ThunderBowl during the first day of the meet.
The bulk of the meet will be contested throughout the day on Saturday.
Siefken launched a throw of 64.83 meters (212 feet, 8 ¼ inches) to best the field of 27 throwers while breaking CMU's former record by nearly nine feet.
Cameron Kalaf had set the former Maverick standard of 62.10 meters (203-9) to win the gold medal at the 2023 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships.
Friday's effort also bested Siefken's 2024 season best (58.97m/193-6) by more than 19 feet and will rank him as high as second on the early season NCAA Division II national performers list pending other results from around the country this week.
Seth Sherwood also finished in the top half of the field, taking 11
th with a throw of 51.40 meters (168-7.5).
In the women's hammer throw, Hancock posted a mark of 53.41 meters (175-2.75) to take third in a field of 32 starters. That effort is above the NCAA provisional qualifying standard of 52.80 meters and will put her as high as fourth on the national list. Meanwhile, redshirt sophomore
Aaliyah Bos set a personal best effort of 39.34 meters (129-0.75) to finish 20
th while redshirt freshman Jalynn Morgan placed 29
