INDIANAPOLIS— Gaby Horton broke one of the oldest Colorado Mesa University record book and placed 13
th in the 200 meters while
Antone Higgs placed 15
th in the long jump as the pair represented the Mavs well at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday here at the Fall Creek Pavilion.
Horton ran to a time of 24.03 seconds besting the former Maverick indoor record of 24.14, set by Whitney Rowe at the 2015 national championship meet. She finished third in her heat and fell just one place shy of a second team all-America honor, which go to the ninth through 12
th place finishers.
Horton, a native of Grand Junction, was seeded 17
th (tie) in the 18-woman field coming into the meet. She had won the silver medal in both the 60 and 200 meters at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships and set a then career-best time of 24.22 seconds in the 200.
Earlier in the day, Higgs recorded a jump of 7.02 meters (23 feet, 0 ½ inches) on his third round attempt. The Freeport, Bahamas native had come into the meet ranked 14
th and was making his NCAA Championship debut after qualifying with his career-best effort of 7.43 meters (24-4.5) at the RMAC Championships a fortnight ago.
Horton was in her first national indoor meet after taking 21
st at the 2024 outdoor championship.
