#10 Mavericks open season in the Golden State

SERIES HISTORY WITH CAL POLY POMONA
Colorado Mesa and Cal Poly Pomona have met up five times in the two programs history with the Broncos holding the all-time edge 5-0 against the Mavericks.

The last time the two teams met up came back in 2007 when the City of St. George, Utah hosted a RMAC, PacWest, CCAA conference crossover. The Mavericks fell 6-5 in the matchup with Cal Poly Pomona during that crossover tournament.

The two teams also met up in back-to-back years of 2001 and 2002 for two games aside. The Bronocos came out on top during all four of those matchups with each margin of victory being four runs or less.

SCOUTING THE BRONCOS
The Broncos opened the season with a series win over No. 25 Westmont at home in Pomona. After dropping the opener 5-4, they went on to a 12-11 extra inning victory and a 10-6 win in the rubber match last Saturday.

Julian Angula leads the team in batting after one week as he went 9-for-15 (.600) with two doubles and a home run. Johnny Pappas is a big bat in the middle of the order as he hit three home runs in the series with Westmont.

Anthony Cosme is the staff ace and went 4.2 innings in his first outing of the season. He finished allowing two runs on two hits, walked two and struck out three.

THE ROAD WARRIORS
Colorado Mesa enters the 2025 campaign with a bit of an odd schedule as they will play four of their first five series of the season on the road. They will open this weekend in Pomona, Calif. with a four game set against the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos at Scolinos Field. A second trip to the Golden State will follow as they will play a three-game series with the Chico State Wildcats in NorCal.

They wont be done there as they head back out for a trip to Nampa, Idaho for a four-game swing with the Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks to conclude an 11-game road trip to begin the season.

Finally, they will return home for their home opening series with the Montana State Billings Yellow Jackets at The Diamond beginning on Thursday February 27 at 2:00pm. That evening will also be the annual Leadoff Dinner.

Following that series, they will start conference play on the road for four-games with the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys in Las Vegas, N.M.

STRENGTH IN THE STAFF
The Mavericks open the season with one of the more veteran pitching staffs across the country as they return 95 percent of last year's production to this year's team. The 95 percent return rate is the highest in Division II baseball.

All-Region selection Caleb Ruter will anchor the staff as he finished last season with a 5-1 record and 62 strikeouts in just over 55 innings pitched. Junior Liam Hohenstein also figures to return to the starting rotation after going 7-1 a season ago.

One of the other major strengths will be in the backend of the bullpen as the Mavericks will return their top four arms from the bullpen. Evan Bunevich, Jordan Ellison, All-Region selection Ethan Voss and JJ Almeda all return. The quartet accounted for eight of the Mavericks 10 saves and had 129 strikeouts in 129 innings.

The Mavericks will miss the starting pitching ability of senior Cole Seward as he will miss the entire season with an injury.

OUTFIELD DEPTH
The Mavericks have an abundance of depth in the outfield with what they have returning along with what the Mavericks brought in during the offseason. Kolby Felix, Paul Schoenfeld and Ethan Nunez figure to get the first crack at the starting lineup.

Felix is a preseason All-American after batting .414 with nine doubles and 15 home runs last season after missing the first month with an injury. Nunez was the RMAC Freshman of the Year while Schoenfeld batted .412 in 29 starts and 34 appearances mostly from the leadoff spot in the order.

Cameron Cartwright and Jackson Lapiner are newcomers that figure to add depth to the outfield.
