Mav women record Friday split

CMU women crush Hastings before Livingston stuns nationally-ranked UNK opponent

KEARNEY, Neb.— The Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team crushed NAIA Hastings College, 7-0 before Makenna Livingston claimed a 6-3, 6-3 win over a nationally-ranked opponent to highlight the Mavericks' efforts in an otherwise difficult match-up against the 16th-ranked University of Nebraska-Kearney Lopers during a Friday split here inside the Ernest Grundy Tennis Center.

The Mavericks, who are now 6-5 overall, claimed their fourth straight victory of the year in the morning over the Broncos before falling 6-1 to the Lopers, who have handed the Mavs two losses this season.

Against Hastings (0-6), the Mavericks won both of the completed doubles matches by 6-0 margins and led the other by a 4-1 margin.  The Mavs then won all six singles matches in straight sets, conceding just seven total games as five different Mavericks won at least one of the sets by a 6-0 scoreline.

Livingston, who was a 6-1, 6-3 winner over the Broncos' Josline Carter in the No. 1 singles match then provided an evening upset against UNK's Fabiana Gamboa, who was ranked 22nd in the ITA's NCAA Division II Singles Rankings and third in the Central Region tabulations.

However, the Lopers, who improved to 6-1 as a team, won the other five singles matches in straight sets as national No. 35 Narindra Ranaivo got past CMU sophomore Devyn Rodriguez, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.

The Lopers also won all three doubles affairs although Ranaivo and Tanyardadzwa were only to squeak by CMU's Jade Brilhante and Rodriguez, 7-5 in the top flight after Alexis Bernthal and Mariya Hatoucka won by a similar 6-4 score over Livingston and Delia Maier at No. 2 doubles.

Ranaivo and Tanyardadzwa are ranked eighth in the Central Region for doubles and are a perfect 7-0 together this spring.

In the morning match against Hastings, Brilhante and Rodriguez defeated Carter and Victoria Harris by a 6-0 margin at No. 1 doubles while Catalina Ballon Marin and Jane Steur won their No. 3 doubles match by the same score.

Rodriguez then blanked Harris, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles while Maier did the same to Cara Ansbach on Court 3.

Meanwhile, Brilhante was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Paige Wilcoxon at No. 4 singles while Ballon Marin beat Lexi Benson, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5.  Steuer also dominated Abby Halverson, 6-1, 6-0 in the sixth flight.

The Mavericks will continue their weekend inside playing Rockhurst University on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. CST (11:30 a.m. Mountain).
