PHOENIX — The first day of their annual February trip to Arizona went well for the Colorado Mesa women's tennis team Friday (Feb. 14), defeating Western New Mexico and Arizona Christian to improve to 12-2 on the trip over the past five years.
Makenna Livingston wrapped up a 4-0 sweep of Western New Mexico with her No. 1 singles victory in the afternoon at the Paseo Racquet Club in Glendale.
After sweeping the doubles matches, Devyn Rodriguez claimed a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 2 singles against Caini Wang, and Catalina Ballon Marin took a 7-6 (7-5), 6-0 win at No. 5 against Jenna Kastell to put the Mavericks one match from victory. Rodriguez, a sophomore, was playing near her hometown of Chandler.
Livingston clinched it with her 6-4, 6-3 victory over Andreea Arnautu.
Delia Maier was leading her No. 3 singles match in the third set, Jade Brilhante won her first set at No. 4 and was tied 4-4 in the second, and Jane Steur was trailing in the second set at No. 6 singles after losing a first-set tiebreaker.
Brilhante was back in Arizona after attending Northern Arizona University last spring, but did not play after transferring from Utah State at the semester break.
The Mavericks improved to 4-1 against Western New Mexico in the past four years meeting in Arizona and are 22-8 overall against the Mustangs.
After that dual, the Mavericks moved to the Phoenix Tennis Center to play Arizona Christian, ranked No. 21 in the NAIA, coming away with the 5-2 win to improve to 8-2 against the Firestorm.
Livingston and Maier won their No. 2 doubles match and Ballon Marin and Steur took the No. 3 match to clinch that team point.
Livingston claimed a three-set win at No. 1 against Madeline Monroy, ranked No. 15 in the NAIA, 6-1, 2-6, 6-1, which clinched the team dual. Rodriguez dropped a three-setter, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4, to No. 28 Lucy Rekasch.
Brilhante won her No. 4 match in straight sets, and Ballon Marin followed suit at No. 5. Steur also won in straight sets at No. 6 singles.
The Mavericks, now 4-4 in dual matches, wrap up their trip to the desert on Saturday morning back at the Paseo Racquet Center against Ottawa University Arizona.
