Mavs used balanced scoring to finish 2025 with win

Allred records double-double as all five starters score in double figures

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev.— All five Maverick starters finished in double-figures as the Colorado Mesa University men's basketball finished off the 2025 and non-conference portions of the season with a 78-69 win over Simon Fraser University on Saturday evening here at College of Southern Nevada's Coyote Event Center in the final game of the Great Western Shootout.

Ty Allred led the Mavericks' scoring efforts with 16 points while pulling down a game-high 13 rebounds to record his fifth double-double of the season as the Mavs finished the weekend tournament with a 1-1 record while moving to 6-5 on the season.

The Mavs shot 50.0 percent (27-54) from the field and were 18-for-21 (85.7 percent) from the free throw line in the physical battle against the Red Leafs, who slipped to 4-8 with their third straight loss after a 3-game winning streak.

CMU is now 4-0 all-time against the Red Leafs.

The Mavs scored 36 points in the paint as Clayton Jewell finished with 12 points and seven rebounds while dishing out five assists and making all six of his free throws.

The Maverick guard trio of Ben Henderson, Mason Honeyman and Harvey White also fared well as Honeyman had 14 points and six assists while canning five of his nine field goal attempts.  White also had 11 points and six assists and was 5-for-8 from the field.  Henderson added 15 points and a pair of CMU's 19 total assists, the Mavs' highest total of the season.

SFU's Sartaj Bhangu finished with 12 points off the bench to lead his team while Zah Stone added 10 points and a team-best six rebounds.

The Mavericks led nearly the entire way, building as much as a 14-point lead with 10:31 to go before the Red Leafs would slice the deficit to six with 4:34 and 3:43 left only to watch Henderson and White make driving layups after a Red Leaf turnover to build the lead back to double digits en route to the victory.

The Mavs got out to a 7-0 lead trailed just once at 19-17 on a Red Leaf 3-pointer at the 7:54 mark of the first half before White triggered an 8-0 run that put the Mavs ahead for good.

The Mavs finished with a 38-32 rebounding advantage and held the Red Leafs to 41.7 percent (25-60) floor shooting.

However, the Canadian squad from Burnaby, British Columbia, hung in the game with 11 3-pointers, including six in the second half, which saw both teams score 42 points.

The Mavs had led 36-27 at halftime after holding the Red Leafs to 29.0 percent (9-31) shooting over the first 20 minutes.

With Saturday's win, the Mavs finished the 2025 calendar year with a 19-9 mark.

They will look to start of 2026 on a high note when they resume Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play with a Saturday, Jan. 3 home game against Regis at 3 p.m. in Grand Junction and Brownson Arena.
