GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa University men's basketball team opened the 2026 calendar year with an emphatic win this afternoon as they began the second half of their season with a strong 90-62 win over the Regis University Rangers in their return to RMAC action at Brownson Arena.
Moving to an undefeated mark of 4-0 at home this season, the Mavericks are now 7-5 overall while improving to 3-1 against conference opponents. They handed the Rangers their ninth loss and six in a row in return as they dropped to 1-9 overall and 0-3 in the RMAC.
The Mavs scored a season-high 90 points in the win while having the 28-point margin be their most in any game of 2025-26 so far.
In addition, the Mavs hit 16 3-pointers, the most in the two years of the program under Head Coach Mike Dunlap while also dominating the rebounding category owning the 43-19 advantage.
Four different players scored in double figures for Colorado Mesa with Ty Allred leading the way with 26 points.
Allred finished going 9-for-14 from the field, including a 5-for-7 clip from three-point range. He would also add nine rebounds and was one of five Mavs to own six boards or more.
Clayton Jewell totaled 18 points with eight rebounds to be the second-highest scorer with the duo of Ben Henderson adding 13 points and six rebounds and Kap Laila adding 10 rebounds and six boards as well.
Henderson also totaled a season and career-high nine assists in the win which marks the most of any Maverick this season. In total, there were 23 assists recorded by CMU.
Colorado Mesa jumped out to an early 8-0 lead to begin the game with them having their closest moment being a 10-9 score after four and a half minutes of play.
The one-point margin was short lived though as the Mavs retaliated with a 12-2 run over the next five minutes. They would build off that momentum and go into half leading 46-30 with them limiting a hot shooting Rangers squad to just 15 points through the final 10 minutes.
Outscoring the Rangers in the second half as well, the Mavs shot 20 percent better than their opponents with them going 16-for-27 from the field and making seven of their 12 attempted three pointers.
The Mavs used strong defense and a 19-13 advantage over the final 10 minutes to solidify the win.
Colorado Mesa led by as many as 34 points in the win with them leading over 39 minutes.
The Rangers made eight three-pointers in both halves to shoot 41 percent from deep but struggled in the paint and on second chance points being outscored 47-15.
Matt Yost and Cooper Firth led the Rangers with 15 points each.
The Mavs will continue play against RMAC opponents this next week as they head south to take on New Mexico Highlands University and Adams State University on Jan. 8 and 10. Streaming can be found through the RMAC Network.
