NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev.— Eight second-half 3-pointers and six points on a single trip down the floor proved to be too much for the Colorado Mesa University men's basketball team to overcome in an 83-73 setback to tournament host Western Washington University on Friday evening during the Great Western Shootout here at the Coyote Event Center on the campus of the College of Southern Nevada.
The Mavericks erased a 59-52 deficit to tie the game at 64 coming out of a media timeout with 6:44 left before the Vikings' Trevor White hit a 3-pointer while drawing a foul. White then grabbed his own rebound off the ensuing free throw before the Vikings converted another old-fashion 3-point play as they took a 70-64 lead that they would never relinquish while improving to 6-6 on the season.
WWU made 11 triples throughout the game, shooting 44.4 percent (8-18) from beyond the arch and 53.1 percent (17-32) overall in the second half.
The Mavs, now 5-5, made just three long distance calls and shot 15.0 (3-20) from beyond the arc.
Nehemiah Pollard made four of the Vikings' treys and scored a game-high 31 points while also grabbing seven rebounds.
Ty Allred led the Mavs with 23 points on 9-for-17 shooting and made two of the Mavs' 3-pointers. Ae also had six rebounds, two blocked shots and a steal. Fellow Maverick big man
Clayton Jewell also fared well with 14 points and seven rebounds while
Mason Honeyman came off the bench to lead the backcourt with 11 points.
The Vikings led for a majority of the first half although the Mavs went on an 15-1 run over 5:40 and eventually went in to the intermission up 34-33.
The Mavs then built the lead to seven (42-35) with another 8-2 start over the first 3:09 of the second half before the Vikings went on an extended 24-10 run to reverse the deficit into a 7-point lead with ten minutes to go.
Allred then hit one of his two 3-pointers before registering his steal, a bucket plus an and-one as the Mavs suddenly pulled back within one 59-58 with 9:21 remaining.
CMU then tied the game at 64 on two Jewell free throws before the devastating Viking trip down the floor helped the Vikings go on to claim the win.
The Mavs shot at a respectable 46.7 percent (28-60) clip from the field and scored 38 points in the paint. They shot at a 56.0 percent rate (14-25) for the first half.
Rebounding was fairly even with WWU finishing with a slight 33-31 edge although the Mavs finished with 11 offensive rebounds, including three from Jewell.
The Mavs will try to bounce back on Saturday when they face another Great Northwest Athletic Conference foe in Simon Fraser University to wrap up the tournament and the 2025 calendar year. That game will tip-off at 6:45 p.m. PST (7:45 p.m. Mountain).
