PUEBLO, Colo. — A third-set tiebreaker victory, followed by a hotly contested straight-sets victory lifted the Colorado Mesa men's tennis team to a thrilling 4-3 victory over Lubbock Christian on Friday (Sept. 13) in the Pueblo Duals.
The Mavericks won both of their duals on the first day of matches at Pueblo City Park, beating Nebraska-Kearney 5-2 on Friday morning.
Henry Scheck's 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (10-6) victory over Mattia Ghedin, the 2023 Lone Star Newcomer of the Year, at No. 2 singles gave the Mavericks a 3-2 lead, and William Leschig wrapped it up. His 7-5, 6-3 win over Kelly Giese at No. 1 singles clinched the dual against the Chaparrals, who qualified for the NCAA Tournament each of the past two seasons.
Lubbock Christian won the final match of the dual, with Blas Ruiz Romero holding off CMU's Jamison Pfingston 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 at No. 6 singles.
The all-important doubles point was won by CMU, with the No. 2 team of Emil Hultman and Philemon Jabin winning 7-6, (7-5) and Pfingston and Romain Payan holding on for a 6-4 win at No. 3.
Lubbock won at No. 4 to open singles play, but Hultman got that point back with a straight-set victory at No. 5. It was 2-2 after LCU won the No. 3 singles match, setting up the thrilling finish.
Scheck, a junior coming off a 4-0 weekend and the "A" singles championship in last week's Colorado College invitational, ran his record this fall to 6-0.
The Mavericks, 2-0 in duals, have only one match Saturday, facing Newman at 9 a.m.
