SERIES HISTORY
Colorado Mesa and Adams State met up back in early April and the two teams split the four-game conference series. Most recall the Saturday game where heavy snow didnt slow either team down as CSU Pueblo scored seven runs in the top of the seventh to take game two of the series 8-7.
Since 2000, Colorado Mesa is 100-40 all-time against the ThunderWolves with a mark of 48-13 at home in Grand Junction.Â
During that same time span, the Mavericks and ThunderWolves have met up 21 times in the conference tournament with the Mavericks prevailing in that series, 15-6. The largest victory in the all-time series was a 19-0 win in 2017's RMAC Tournament.
SCOUTING THE THUNDERWOLVES
CSU Pueblo enters the tournament as the No. 6 seed in the tournament with a 28-21 overall record and a 17-15 mark inside the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. They finished the final two series of the season with a 5-3 record including a series split against No. 2 seed Regis.Â
Christian Castaneda is the Pack's top hitter with a .366 batting average with 18 doubles and 17 home runs. He hit four home runs in the series with Colorado Mesa earlier this year.Â
RMAC Pitcher of the Year candidate Tyler Curtis went 9-2 with a 5.28 ERA in the regular season. He had 65 strikeouts with opponents hitting just .296 off him.Â
MAKE IT A DOZEN
With the Mavericks win on Saturday, they secured their 12th straight Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular season title. It is also the 27th total regular season won by the Mavericks which ranks second all-time in RMAC History. The next closest program behind Colorado Mesa is University of Colorado with eight.Â
The next closest current RMAC institution is CSU Pueblo who has four titles but hasnt won one since 2004.Â
The longest regular season title streak is 27 in a row held by Northern Colorado from 1940-68 with a break in 1943 and 1944 due to World War II.Â
FELIX COMPLETES THE TRIFECTA
Maverick sophomore outfielder Kolby Felix was named the RMAC Player of the Week after the weekend against Adams State. Felix batted .789 (15-for-19) with four home runs, three doubles and a triple in the series. He added 13 runs scored, 13 RBIs and an OPS over 2.490 in the weekend split with the Grizzlies. The Sun City, Ariz. native hit for the cycle in the third game of the series, completing the rare feat in order. He went 5-for-5 in the seven-inning game and recorded two singles, a double, a triple and completed the cycle with a home run in the sixth inning.Â
The sophomore becomes the second Maverick outfielder to accomplish the feat this year as Paul Schoenfeld accomplished the feat against Northwest Nazarene in February.Â
Felix is the third Maverick outfielder to be named a RMAC Player of the Week this season joining outfield mates Robert Sharrar and Paul Schoenfeld.
BOMBS AWAY
Colorado Mesa and Adams State combined for 35 home runs in each school's final series of the regular season. For the Mavericks, the hit 19 home runs, scored 86 runs and hit 22 doubles in the series. They batted .486, slugged .956 and a .544 on-base percentage in one of the most prolific offensive outputs Colorado Mesa has ever had in a series.
In game two of the series, Colorado Mesa hammered 10 home runs in that game which eclipsed the program record of nine set a handful of years ago against Regis.Â
The RMAC record for home runs came in 2009 when CSU Pueblo belted 11 round trippers against Colorado Christian.Â
THE BIG LEFTY
With all the offense happening in the series with Adams State, junior lefty Caleb Ruter didnt seem to care. The wind was blowing out at 40-plus miles per hour but that didnt slow down Ruter. He allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits, walked four and struck out six to earn the win. He allowed just one extra base-hit during the start.Â
On the season, Ruter is 4-0 with a 4.91 ERA with 51 strikeouts in 44 innings pitched.Â
