Fugate heroics allow CMU to remain alive in RMAC Tournament

Senior first baseman matches Maverick doubles record, hits game-winning homer

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University senior first baseman Ava Fugate matched the Maverick school record for doubles and then delivered the Mavs' best moment of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament to date, delivering a 3-run opposite field home run in the sixth inning to give the Mavericks a 4-2 elimination game win over visiting CSU Pueblo on Friday morning here at the CMU Softball Stadium.

Held without a run in Thursday's game against Regis, which ended the Mavs' 33-game winning streak while knocking them into the elimination bracket, and to just one run through five innings of Friday's game against the ThunderWolves, Fugate delivered a much needed blast to right field as the Mavs staved off elimination while advancing in the bracket to face the Game 6 MSU Denver/Colorado School of Mines winner in Game 8 at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.

CMU, the tournament's top seed, is now 44-8 overall.

The Pack, who had 1-0 and 2-1 leads in Friday's contest, saw their season come to an end with a 22-35 record.  They lost their six, including five games to the Mavericks over the past eight days as CMU sealed up the RMAC regular season title and tournament hosting rights with a regular season series sweep last Friday and Saturday.

Fugate's homer, the 11th of the Second Team All-RMAC selection's season, drove in freshman Cailynn Parsons and Jackie Oster and put the Mavs ahead for good before Preslee Christensen retired three straight ThunderWolves in the top of the seventh to earn her 18th win of the season.

Christensen allowed just five hits with no walks in the complete game effort and struck out three while improving to 18-4.

In the sixth, Parsons delivered a single to left to begin the inning before fellow freshman Emma Roach drew a walk.  Oster then came in to run for Roach before a line drive fielder's choice off the bat of Myah Arrieta, set the stage for Fugate's heroics, which brought home Parsons and Arrieta, who scored her 82nd run of the season, just one shy of a Maverick and RMAC record.

Fugate had doubled in the bottom of the first, recording her 27th two-bagger of the season allowing her to match Brooke Hodgson's 6-year old program record.  However, the Mavericks could not cash in for the game-tying run after the Pack had taken a 1-0 lead on a Madelyn Huerta double in the bottom of the first.

The Mavs would be able to tie the game in the fourth on a 2-out rally as freshman Allison Lindsay delivered a pinch-hit RBI single after Makayla Westmoreland and  Parsons had singled.

However, the Mavs left the bases loaded as Fugate lined out to second later in the inning after Arrieta extended her reached safely streak to 50 games with a 2-out walk following Lindsay's clutch hit.

The Mavs also left two runners on base in the fifth inning and temporarily fell behind again in the top of the sixth as Cailtyn Cole tripled down the left field line before scoring the go-ahead run two plays later on a nicely executed Darleen Falcon squeeze.

Christensen then set the Pack down in order, striking out pinch hitter Isabella Hewitt to end the game.
