SERIES HISTORY WITH WEST TEXAS A&M
Colorado Mesa and West Texas A&M have met up four times in the past with the Mavericks owning a 3-1 record all-time against the Buffs. All four matchups have occurred in the NCAA Tournament and three of those four matchups took place in Grand Junction.
The last time the two teams met came in 2022 when they met in the NCAA South Central Regional in Grand Junction with Colorado Mesa prevailing 5-3 at The Diamond.Â
The Buffs come into this NCAA Regional as the No. 3 seed after finishing second in te Lone Star Conference regular season. They fell to UAFS in the conference tournament.
SERIES HISTORY WITH ANGELO STATE
The Mavericks and Angelo State have become region rivals over the years as the two teams have met up in each of the past four post seasons. They have met 11 times, all in the post season and all but one of the matchups occurred in Grand Junction. The Rams have a 7-4 edge on the Mavericks in the series.
Last season, the Rams swept Mesa in the NCAA South Central Super Regional on their way to the National Championship.
Angelo State enters this season's post season as the No. 6 seed after finishing third in the Lone Star Conference. They were bumped out of the tournament by upstart UT Permian Basin.
ANOTHER TRIP TO THE TOURNAMENT
Colorado Mesa enters the NCAA Tournament for the 23rd time in program history after earning the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference automatic bid after winning the conference tournament last season in Grand Junction. This will be the team's 15th straight tournament appearance as 2008 was the last season they did not make the tournament field.
The Mavericks have hosted a section of the regional for the third straight season and have been a participant in every NCAA Super Regional since the format began in 2019. There opponent in each of those Super Region finals....Angelo State who enters this tournament as the No. 6 seed and in the regional in Grand Junction. We will have at least one new institution in the NCAA Super Regional this season.
POSTSEASON PITCHING
The pitching staff has been the most talked about group this season and really began to turn it on during the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conferece Tournament. The starting pitchers allowed just seven earned runs in 24 and a third innings pitched and the staff maintained an ERA of 3.00 during the tournament.
Both Liam Hohenstein and Cole Seward were named to the All-Tournament Team for their outings with Seward striking out a career-high 10 Adams State Grizzlies during his seven inning start while Hohenstein pitched a complete game while fanning nine.Â
GOING GONZO
The last four weeks of the season, senior Jonathan Gonzalez has gone absolutely bonkers at the plate. The RMAC Tournament MVP hit .600 (9-for-15) in the tournament with a .733 slugging percentage and a .611 on-base percentage. He was among the tournament leaders in both batting average and hits.
The Brawley, Calif. native has batted over .515 in the last four weeks. That includes 32 hits, six doubles, four home runs and 21 runs driven in from his second base position. He was named a NCBWA All-Region First Team selection this week along with teammate Robert Sharrar.
THE GLOWS
The Glowacki Family has a major stake in the NCAA South Central Regional this year. The family would like nothing more than to have Colorado Mesa and Texas Permian Basin make the NCAA Super Regional as that would guarantee a member of their family would be heading to the NCAA National Championship tournament in Cary, N.C.
Tyler is a junior left handed pitcher and outfielder for the Mavericks while his brother Brandon is a junior infielder for the Falcons in Odessa, Texas.Â
THE INJURY BUG CREEPS UP
The injury bug has been somewhat a theme for Colorado Mesa this season and it found its way into the RMAC Tournament last weekend. Ethan Nunez, Kolby Felix, and Braden Winget all exited early from games last weekend with apparent injuries.Â
It has yet to be determined if any of them will miss the NCAA South Central Regional at this point so stay tuned.
