SERIES HISTORY
Colorado Mesa and Adams State have met 46 times since the Grizzlies brought the baseball program back ahead of the 2013 season. The Mavericks are 44-2 in those meetings and are currently riding a 30 game winning streak over Adams State.
The Mavericks are 17-1 when playing those games in Alamosa and have scored an average of 12.4 runs in each contest of the all-time series. Colorado Mesa swept last season's series in Grand Junction that included a pair of run-rule games.
The lone two losses the Mavericks have suffered to Adams State came in 2015 when they fell 7-4 in Alamosa and once in 2016 when they lost 3-2 in Grand Junction.Â
SCOUTING THE GRIZZLIES
Prior to this weekend's series, Adams State has already secured a berth in the RMAC Tournament for the second time the team was brought back in 2013. They have matched the record for most wins in a season which happened in 2016 that was also the only other year they made the conference tournament.
Mike Bathauer is one of the better hitters in the conference. He boasts a .409 average with 10 home runs and 61 runs driven in. He enters the weekend with a 12-game hitting streak.Â
Brian Walters has given the Grizzlies a nice shot in the arm. He leads the team in strikeouts with 57.Â
TAKING HOLD OF SHORTSTOP
Redshirt sophomore TJ Rheem has staked claim to the shortstop position the last three weeks. He has six multi-hit games in the last three weekends and batted .500 in the series win over New Mexico Highlands.Â
On the season, he is batting .389 with six doubles and 16 runs driven in in 21 games played with 16 starts. He has an on-base percentage of .515 and an OPS of 1.015.Â
STOS
Despite the team batting just .302 in the series with the Cowboys, a handful of athletes had solid weekends including designated hitter Christos Stefanos. The junior batted .500 with two doubles, two runs scored and six runs driven in.Â
Stefanos has 16 hits in his last ten games dating back to game three of the Chico State series.Â
HOW THE STAFF GOT ITS GROOVE BACK
The Colorado Mesa pitching staff has had its rough weekends throughout the season but this past weekend against New Mexico Highlands may be just what the doctor ordered. The Mavericks had a 0.56 ERA in the series and allowed two earned runs and a total of five runs overall. The last time the Mavericks allowed five total runs in a weekend was in 2017 in the series against Colorado Christian.
All four starting pitchers on the weekend went at least four innings and allowed three runs (none earned) on 15 hits, struck out 26 in 23 innings of work.Â
The most impressive number from the weekend...walks. Colorado Mesa allowed just six walks in the four games.Â
RETURN TO THE ROTATION
Two Maverick pitchers have found their way back into the rotation after rough outings relegated them to bullpen duties for a majority of the season. Both Liam Hohenstein and Jordan Pace have been inserted back into the rotation and are making a strong case to remain their through the postseason.Â
Liam Hohenstein pitched seven shutout innings in a win over New Mexico Highlands. He didnt allow a hit until the fifth inning and surrendered just three hits while striking out 11 to improve to 6-1 on the year. In his last 13 innings pitched, he has allowed five hits and struck out 15.Â
Jordan Pace has pitched eight shutout innings in the last two weeks. He has scattered six hits and struck out 10 while earning both a win and a save over that span. Last weekend, he earned the start in game four of the series and allowed three hits and struck out four in five innings of work.Â
MAKE IT A DOZEN
By virtue of the Mavericks three wins over Highlands and one Regis loss to Colorado Christian, Colorado Mesa has claimed at least a share of the RMAC regular season title for the 12th straight season and hosting duties for the RMAC Tournament. With one more win or one more Regis loss, the Mavericks will claim the title outright.Â
