Arrieta sets CMU, NCAA all-division homer records in doubleheader sweep

CMU extends winning streak to 19 behind all-around team effort

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Myah Arrieta tied and then set a Colorado Mesa University record for home runs in a season while breaking and extending the NCAA all-divisions record for consecutive games with a homer as she hit her 21st and 22nd of the season in the Mavs' 7-0 and 19-5 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep of visiting Chadron State College on Saturday.

The junior shortstop and Grand Junction Central High School product has now hit at least one home run in each of the Mavs' last ten games, hitting 15 in that stretch which has seen her win back-to-back Louisville Slugger/NFCA NCAA Division II Player of the Week honors on each of the last Tuesdays.

She hit her school-record tying 21st of the season as part of a 3-run fourth inning the first game, helping the Mavs put away the shutout.  Arrieta then blasted another 2-run home run, one of five homers Mavs hit as a team of the night cap, in the second inning as she went past Kelly Adams' 23-year old CMU record of 21.

In the process, Arrieta also moved two past Rockhurst's Alex Jacobson for the overall NCAA and Division II record for consecutive games with a home run.  Jacobson hit one in eight straight games just over a decade ago from Mar. 22-29, 2014.

Arrieta, who is now just three home runs away from the RMAC single-season home run record of 25, went 4-for-4 with two walks, five runs scored and four RBIs during the day, but was just a part of an overall team effort that saw the Mavericks win for the 18th and 19th consecutive games, while moving to 29-7 overall and to 27-3 in RMAC play.

The visiting Eagles have now lost 15 straight and are 5-31 overall and 5-21 in the RMAC heading into another doubleheader on Sunday, which will begin at 11 a.m.

The Mavs are also 14-0 at home this season.

They hit six home runs throughout the day and now have 90 on the season, just ten shy of their 2022 program-record of 100, with 14 regular season games still remaining on the schedule.

All nine Maverick starters recorded a hit in the first game as Preslee Christensen struck out ten Eagles to record her third shutout of the season while improving to 10-3.  She gave up just four hits, all singles to the Eagles.

In addition to Arrieta's home run, the Mavericks also added five doubles from five different hitters and five other singles in the first game victory.

They then pounded out a season-high 20 hits while matching a season-high for runs scored in the second game, finished in five innings via the mercy-rule.

Arrietta and Iliana Mendoza both went 4-for-4 in the second game.  Mendoza had a double and three singles and drove in five runs.  Miranda Pruitt also had five RBIs during a 3-for-4 effort that included her 17th home run of the season, second most in the RMAC behind only Arrieta.

Ally Distler also added her 13th homer of the campaign while Mekayla Westmoreland hit her sixth.  Freshman Allison Lindsay also hit a pinch-hit 3-run shot, her third of the season, during a 6-run fourth inning that followed an 8-run third inning, triggered by Distler's lead-off blast.  Westmoreland and Arrieta both hit their homers during the second inning.

The Mavs scored multiple runs in each inning of Game 2, taking a 2-0 lead on Pruitt's home run in the bottom of the first before the Eagles scored two runs, one of which was unearned, in the top of the second.

Westmoreland then put the Mavs up for good in the bottom of the second, three plays before Arrieta hit a 2-run laser to the party deck in center field to break Adams' Maverick record as the Mavs went up 5-2.

Distler then extended the lead with her third-inning lead off home runs before 3-run doubles from both Mendoza and Pruitt helped the Mavs extend the lead to 13-2.

The Mavs then batted around in the fourth inning as pinch hitter Dakota DiPaola and Mendoza both had 2-hit innings as the Mavs extended the lead to 19-2.

The Eagles would pull back three runs in the top of the fifth but could not stave off the mercy rule as Maverick pitcher Hannah Sattler tossed the complete game victory to improve to 7-2.

Earlier, the two teams were scoreless for 2 ½ innings of the first game, before Arrieta hit a 1-out single in the bottom of the third after drawing a 4-pitch walk to lead off the bottom of the first.  She then moved to third on an Ava Fugate double, her team-leading 19th of the campaign, before Distler doubled both home to put the Mavs up 2-0.

Westmoreland then hit a double to begin the bottom of the fourth and scored on a Eagle throwing error, just one pitch before Arrieta's school-record line drive homer that gave CMU a 5-0 lead through four innings.

A Pruitt double, RBI single by Chloe Valdez and Bella Aragon run-scoring double then extended the Mavs' lead to 7-0 in the fifth as Christensen was able to retire nine of the final ten Eagles she faced.
