Mavs suffer 5-2 defeat at MSU Denver

CMU sophomores Hultman, Manzano claim victories

DENVER— Sophomores Emil Hultman and Diogo Manzano, the Mavericks' team leaders in wins, both did their part claiming singles victories but were not enough for the Colorado Mesa University men's tennis team, which dropped a costly 5-2 decision to rival MSU Denver on Friday at the Roadrunners' Assembly Athletic Complex.

Hultman was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Reid Rainwater and claimed his 14th singles win of the season in the No. 5 match while Manzano won his tenth match of the season, coming from a set down to defeat Jeanloup Auzias by a 2-6, 6-0, 7-5 margin at No. 3.  Hultman has now won four straight decisions.

However, the Roadrunners won the other four matches, three by tight margins as they improved to 8-11 on the season while dropping the Mavs down to 7-13.  The Roadrunners also all but locked up a spot in the Pacific West Conference Tournament while dashing the Mavericks' qualification hopes.

MSU Denver came into the match ranked eighth in the PacWest Rankings, one spot ahead of the Mavericks, who were ranked ninth.  Only the top eight teams will be selected by the conference' rankings committee on Monday and head-to-head play is a major factor in that selection process.

The two teams will play again next Saturday (Apr. 13) in Grand Junction, but that match will only be used to determine seeding, not selection.

In Friday's dual, which was moved up three hours due to high wind forecasts, the Roadrunners dominated doubles play winning by 6-0 margins at both No. 1 and No. 2 to clinch the doubles point.

The Roadrunners then won four of the six singles matches but had to battle in most of them.

Alejandro Jimenez was a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 winner at No. 1 over CMU's Philemon Jabin while nationally-ranked (No. 54) Juho Kantola, got by William Leschig by a 6-1, 6-7 (9-11), 6-2 margin in three sets on Court 2.

Marco Jalalian had an easier time at No. 4 singles, defeating Henry Scheck, 6-2, 6-0 while Maximo Lawlor was able to sneak past CMU's Jorge Abreu, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (13-11) in the sixth flight.

The Mavs will take on Colorado College next Saturday at 9 a.m. and will then take on MSU Denver at 2:30 that afternoon to close out the season.
