SPOKANE, Wash. – A select group of Colorado Mesa women's wrestlers headed to the Pacific Northwest for the 2024 U.S. Marine Corps Women's National Championships at The Podium over the weekend. The Maverick student-athletes competed in the U20 and U23 National Championships portion of the tournament.
Sophomore
Celina Cooke had the toughest road of anyone in the tournament as she doubled up her placing as she finished fifth at the U23 Tournament and fifth at the U20 Tournament. The Sparks, Nev. native wrestled a total of 14 matches across the two tournaments in a three-day span.
In the U20 tournament, Cooke defeated rival Nari Miller of Texas Woman's 9-8 to advance to the medal rounds and worked her way into the fifth-place match while in the U23 portion after dropping into the consolation bracket, she did the same and wound up winning four matches in the consolation rounds.
Hania Halverson (57kg) and
Kaydence Boyd (62kg) had solid showings in both tournaments falling just short of the medal rounds in each while
Adriana Gomez (50kg) came up just shy in the U20 Tournament.
Incoming freshman Madison Heinzer and Gretchen Donnaly each placed at the U23 tournament. Heinzer finished in eighth place at 50 kg in the U23 tournament while Donnaly placed third at 72 kg in the U20 tournament.
