CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The No. 5 Colorado Mesa women's wrestling team took 10 wrestlers to the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championship (NCWWC) that began on Friday (Mar. 8) and they will be coming home with six All-Americans after the first day of competition. Every Maverick won a match in the tournament and are in position for a top five finish in the team standings.
The Mavericks are currently in fifth place with 50.5 points and are eight points ahead of sixth place Sacred Heart with Presbyterian, Lock Haven and Wisconsin Stevens Point trailing them. NCAA Division III North Central is leading the tournament with 127.5 points followed by NCAA Division I Iowa who has 113 points.
Colorado Mesa will have six wrestlers earn a top-8 finish and a spot on the podium tomorrow.
Jennesis Martinez suffered her first loss of the season in the quarterfinals at 101 pounds but was able to bounce back and reach day two and claim her fourth All-American honor. She earned an 8-2 decision over Simpson's Emaline Hicks in the blood round to advance to Saturday.
Earlier in the day she picked up an 11-0 win over Olivia Klein of East Stroudsburg before earning a pin of Alexis Dobson of New England College at the 5:28 mark. In the match with Dobson, she surrendered her first points of the season.
Martinez will take on King's Avery Kibelbek in her first match tomorrow.
Isabella Morales earned her second day two nod in a row as she made it this year at 109 pounds. Morales defeated Natalie Majer of Carthage 9-0 in her first match before falling to Ava Bayless of Iowa by pin to drop down into the consolation bracket.
The Toppenish, Wash. native bounced back with a win over Consuelo Garcia of McKendree 5-2 in the blood round. Morales will look to improve on her seventh-place finish from last year as she is set to take on Danielle Garcia of King in her first match on Saturday.
Redshirt junior
Holly Beaudoin earned another All-American honor after advancing to Saturday's medal rounds at 136 pounds. The Poulsbo, Wash. native earned a pin at 1:28 over Madison Wellen of D'Youville before squaring off with Simon Fraser's Jade Trolland for the fourth time this season. Trolland defeated Beaudoin for the third time this season dropping Beaudoin down into the consolation rounds.
Beaudoin came back and defeated Natasha Markoutsis of Aurora by pin at 2:36 to survive the blood round. She will face Lily Luft of Iowa to start the day off tomorrow.
For the first in her career, 143-pounder
Erica Schroeder claimed All-American honors as she advanced to day two. Schroeder won her first match of the day on criteria 6-6 over Athena Wilden of William Jewell before falling to Maddie Kubicki of Presbyterian by fall at 1:03 in the quarters.
She came back and defeated Autumn Flanigan of Augsburg on criteria 3-3 to advance to the medal rounds. The Nuevo, Calif. native will face Zoey Lints of Elmira to begin tomorrow.
At 155 pounds,
Dalia Garibay earned another trip to the medal rounds at the NCWWC after earning a 12-0 technical fall win over Jocelyn Yepez of Emmanuel in the consolation round this evening. She opened the day with a 10-0 technical fall win over Azariah Moore of Lock Haven before falling in the quarterfinals to London Houston of North Central 6-0.
She will face Alex Hofrichter of Dubuque tomorrow morning.
Jayleen Sekona made it three straight All-American honors as she is in the consolation quarterfinals. The junior opened the tournament with a hard fought 2-1 win over Jacklyn Smith of Sacred heart and followed with a 16 second pin of Cassidee Easey of Alma.
Sekona fell in the quarters to her opponent from New Jersey City University before bouncing back with a 12-2 technical fall win over Makayla Rivera of Lindenwood to reach day two of the tournament.
Sekona will face North Central's Brittyn Corbishly tomorrow.

Caylee Collins (170) all went 2-2 on the day while
Kaydence Boyd (130) won her consolation round two bout.
Day two of the NCWWC begins at 10am with a combined round of semifinals and consolations before the championship finals are set for 6pm.
