MANSHEIM, Pa. – The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) announced the recipients of the NCAA Women's Scholar All-America awards on Tuesday (Mar. 26) afternoon. The awards recognize student-athletes who excelled both on the mat and in the classroom.
Colorado Mesa had eight wrestlers earn NWCA Scholar All-America honors which is on a scale from 3.0 to 4.0 depending on how they finished in the NCWWC Regional and National Tournaments.
The Mavericks were among the top-10 teams in terms of total recipients in this year's grouping. A total of 199 student-athletes were honored from a total of 47 institutions.
Jennesis Martinez (Business Administration),
Isabella Morales (Exercise Science),
Erica Schroeder (Psychology), and
Jayleen Sekona (Sports Management) were all NCWWC All-Americans and now NWCA Scholar All-Americans. Martinez is now a multi-time winner of the Scholar All-America award and recently earned her fourth All-American honor after placing sixth at the NCWWC.
Morales earned her second straight All-American honor and now picked up her second straight Scholar All-America honor while Schroeder earned her third straight NWCA Scholar All-America honor but her first All-America finish on the mat earlier this month.
Sekona earned her third straight All-American honor on the mat after a seventh-place finish at 191 pounds and her second straight NWCA Scholar All-America honor after being named to the list today.
Hania Halverson (Exercise Science) and
Valerie Glenn (Secondary Education) both competed at the NCWWC Region VI Tournament and finished in the top-8 at 123 and 143 pounds respectively. Halverson picks up her second NWCA Scholar All-America award and for Glenn her first in as many seasons.
Jennifer Curtin (Exercise Science) and
Maggie Smith (Biology) join Glenn as the only freshman on the list for the Mavericks.
The NWCA Scholar All-America Team awards will be announced at a later date.
